Just wondering if anyone knows about how long it will take to get an interview for the US Consulate/Embassy in Sydney? I just called NVC on Jan 30 and found out our case was approved. Do they usually give about a month's notice before the interview? And should my husband now get the medical? Or wait until we know the exact date of the interview. Thanks so much!

That is short notice! I actually just got an email from NVC this morning and my husband's interview is March 12th. He already has done this medical.. but we had it done too early. Well a bit too early and we had no idea how messed up our paperwork and case was going to be by the govt. He is going to call the doc on Monday and see if he has to get the whole medical redone or just a checkup type visit. I hope we can just do a checkup thing because the medical, including xrays was just under $700.

I am the USC, do I need to go to Sydney as well for the interview? I have heard it isn't required, but recommended. And I've heard especially if the USC is in the country, it's best they go along. I really want to go with my husband. How will that work for your interview if the medical report isn't there with you? I think the doc can forward the report to the consulate.

It's not necessary or required for a USC to attend in Australia. We're not a high-fraud country. If you want to you can. I don't recall if they'll let you in, I think they will. If not, you can just wait on the middle floor area. Nice view, couches were okay to sit one while I called people when i was approved :D

When you say he did the medical early, how early? It's valid for 12 months so he did it almost a year ago?

http://canberra.usembassy.gov/med_exam_instructions.html

Medical reports are valid for six or twelve months from the date of examination, depending on the examination results. Your medical report must be valid at the time of your entry into the United States. If the report is valid less than six months, your visa will be limited to match the validity of your medical report.

All medical fees are to be paid in cash only on the day of the examination. The U.S. Government does not pay medical fees. The medical forms will be provided by your chosen panel physician.

I really want to go with him. We live in Western Australia so we'll see how much two tickets would cost us.. with all the other expenses we have coming up.

Yeah it has been a year since he had the medical. I don't know why we had it done so early.. just trying to get things out of the way and we also didn't know/hadn't read that we should wait until in process or approved with NVC to get the medical. But it took USCIS 9 months to look at and approve of my I-130. And I also was required to fly back to America for an interview with Homeland Security last Sept before they approved the petition.. totally not necessary, no one could tell me why I had the interview. Anyway...so had the USCIS process not taken 9 months, and we got through NVC earlier, the medical would have been valid.

You had an interview in the US? Then I would definitely attend the Aussie interview if you're in Australia.

Most likely he'll need a whole new medical (but not new shots) but hey, small price to pay to finally be together in the US hey :)

Yes I had an interview in Sept in the US with Homeland Security. I believe it wasn't necessary as it's not part of the normal I-130 process. I don't know if I was just randomly selected for an interview, or else they really messed up our case-which I believe is the real reason. USCIS couldn't even tell me why I was scheduled for the interview. I tried to see if I could have it in Australia, but no one knew anything. SO yeah, I went back to America for about a week, then came back to Australia.

I really want to go to Sydney for the interview, do you think they will let me in at the interview? The only reason I was thinking about not going is finanically.. but if it's good for me to be there, I want to be there.

It certainly doesn't hurt to try and be there for the interview and your fiance can mention that you're downstairs (if they won't let you up) if they want to speak with you too. They're usually pretty reasonable in Aus.

The I-130 interview isn't normal which is why even though it won't be cheap, I'd at least be there downstairs even if they won't let you up. PLUS then you can celebrate in Sydney together before heading back to your residence in Aus :)

You can go if you want to, I just had my interview in Sydney yesterday and my hubby went with me, he is USC, nobody said anything stopping him.
