Applying for marriage licence with SSN tip

Apologies if this has been mentioned, or is in the wrong forum, but I just wanted to share some information I found out today.

The 'Step by step guide to getting a social security number' page suggests that it is best to wait around 2 weeks from POE to applying for SSN, to avoid extra verification, and a hold up.

However I was advised by Milwaukee's Courthouse that when applying for a marriage licence, they will accept the letter the Social Security Office gave to me stating my application is being verified instead of having to wait for the clearance, therefore saving a lot of time.

Based on our own experience, it's best to get that SSN 2 weeks after POE. This way, once you have SSN card you can apply to get your State ID card so that you can easily add your spouse to your joint account, open new bank account, health and life insurance, add your spouse to PO Box, etc. You will get extra verification if your I-94 is less than 60 days left before it expired. In California, DMV won't issue State ID if I-94 is less than 60 days from expiration.

You do not need a SSN to get married. There is no reason to wait for it.
