NVC Checklist

I sent original docs (marriage cert and birth cert) to the NVC but still got a checklist. Thought this might happen but still disappointed.

Here in Chile you can get these online and they have an electronic stamp so we did that. Apparently that is not official enough for the NVC.

But the physical civil registry gives you identical documents, also with the electronic stamp (from what I understand).

I even included an explanation of this along with my packet. Now received a checklist.

I could go to the civil registry and ask them to put a fake, real stamp on the document? Maybe they would do that but I'm not sure.

Any thoughts on what else I can do? At some point the NVC has to get used to the fact that a lot of supposedly less advanced countries are doing more things electronically...

You can try requesting a supervisor review, and explain the situation in Chile how documents are issued.

I've seen countless people get checklists for civil documents that don't look "real", even though they are. Unfortunately, the reviewing officers don't seem to know everything about all countries.

I might try that. As it turns out, we haven't received a checklist for the police cert so far, which was from the same online civil registry. AND, I just talked to my husband, it turns out the birth cert was from the online source, but the marriage cert he actually did get at the official civil registry!!!

I was about to buy some official looking blue stamp and just make a "real" version myself... :innocent:

Your idea sounds much more reasonable though, Saylin! Good to know I'm not alone in this issue!

So, I just call and ask to talk to a supervisor?? Is that how that works?

Yup. They may tell you there's no supervisor at the moment though and either they'll tell you 1). the supervisor will call back or 2). to call back at another time or 3). to email them.

Okay I just called NVC and talked to a really stressed out sounding lady on the phone... she didn't really give me an opportunity to talk to a supervisor.

What she did say is that she would have someone review my packet again, which would take 10-15 business days, and that I should call back in 10 days to see whether they accepted the certificates or not.

Should I call back again and ask to talk to a supervisor?

Should I try to get more "official looking" certificates, whatever that may be, and send them anyway? I ask what qualities they looked for in the certificates and she told me she didn't know.

Should I just wait ten days?

Usually when packages are reviewed a second time, it's done by a supervisor. You can still call up and try requesting a supervisor to speak with. Some operators are just really strung up and don't allow you to do much...

I wanted to add that you should not do anything yourself to alter your documents. I would think that would be considered fraudulent especially after you explained that the documents presented are the only way they come.

And perhaps me sharing part of my experience might help. I had a checklist come back saying that a number on my AOS didn't match the most recent tax return. Even though the numbers did match and there was no change I could possibly make to the form, my instructions from NVC were to send updated paperwork. Well I sent the exact same paperwork except with a new date on it. It was accepted the 2nd time. Even though it was all exactly the same.

The situation might not be the same for you but I wanted to share my experience.

thanks for the advice to both of you!

i've read that argentineans sometimes have the same problems as they use docs with electronic stamps too. some have had luck asking the registro civil to put an extra stamp on it or getting it "legalizado" by another government department. in the meantime we might try to take these steps so that if they do tell us the docs are still not OK, we can send them right away.

it's also interesting to hear about sending the same exact documents and then getting them accepted! weird! i'm wondering if that could work for me as well. i remember that 2 were in black and white and one was in color. since 2 got rejected and 1 didn't i wonder if simply getting them in color ink makes a difference. how absurd would that be. hmm.

gonna try calling the NVC again today and see if anything's happened, or if i can talk to a supervisor. the email idea is not a bad one either.

You're right!! we're so close! not time to mess up anything now!!

AHHHHHHHHHHH WHY IS EVERYONE AT NVC SO ANGRY ALL THE TIME!!

sorry

need to rant

I call in a very polite solicitous voice and I get constantly interrupted, and bombarded with a cascade of "m'am"s that keep me from even asking any questions. so far every person i've talked to goes straight to the defensive and takes an extremely rude tone.

they tell me, "You just need to send the certificates that are the ones from the issuing government authority." i say, "I did that already." they say "then you don't have to do anything else" then i say "well okay then accept my packet" and they say "call back after the review" and don't give me any hints about WHAT i should do in the meantime to get more official looking certificates.

do you guys actually thing it is worth sending an email too?? until now i was much more impressed by NVC than USCIS but now i am not so sure!!

I got this Checklist Cover Letter from the NVC. Does this mean they don't accept the documents or they do? Or does it have nothing to do with it?

1 - IMMIGRANT VISA APPLICATION PART 1:_______________________

The NVC has received the requested Affidavit of Support (Form I-864) or supporting documents.

However, we are still waiting for the response to the checklist letter for the Immigrant Visa Application

or civil documentation. Please return the requested information so that we may complete the processing of your case.

Are they referring to the Birth Certificate and Marriage Certificate? Because in the earlier checklist this was clearly spelled out, each document on its own subheading. Now, this is all the email says so I'm a little confused.

Can anyone enlighten me? thanks VJers!

Hmm, not too sure. You might want to call up tonight (still 1.5 hours left!) and inquire. I would normally say that's a false checklist, but your case is a little different.

From My experience which has been all bad at NVC I would just resend both documents being asked for by the checklist. They do not have the ones they want and want you to resend them.

I have had to resend my DS-230 3 times now because they keep losing it!!!!

I called yesterday and spoke to a supervisor again and was told not to call for another 20 days, since I had called 3 days before and spoke to a supervisor.

I am at 42 business days and told to wait 20 more, you cannot and never will convince me the Electronic way is faster. I have seen dozens of people who have sent in by snail mail and approved in the time I am waiting.

Such is life.

Good luck and I would just resend the documents.
