Hello VJ family I don't know if this is the right section to write my thread and I apologize if not. Me and my husband is currently working on enrolling me to a driving school. I got my driving learner's permit yesterday and wondering if how long does the driving training/classes usually take specifically in NOVA(Northern Virginia) area? Is there any training school that takes at least a week or 2?

Any suggestion/advices are welcome and highly appreciated. Thank you so much :)

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I purchased some behind the wheel training for my wife here in Minnesota. We purchased it as a package, with 3 training behind the wheel sessions of 2 hours each, which were spaced a week apart. Followed by a one hour review and taking her to the behind the wheel exam. She was expected to practice on her own between those sessions, but besides practicing her parallel parking, she did very little. Best money I could have spent, as the instructor really knew what would be tested and was very good at teaching the required skills. My wife had learned a number of bad habits driving in the Philippines, and he was really good at getting her to get over those bad habits to. Her classes focused on what was needed to pass the test. Her and I together worked on other skills, such as driving at freeway and highway speeds and merging.

The driving school we used was really ready to modify their course and focus on the skills my wife needed. We could have moved the courses closer together to, it was all up to us. Call around to different schools, find one that will cater to your needs.

It will take a bit of searching to find a school willing to assist a new adult driver. Most are geared towards the teenager or adult that needs a refresher. I know I never was able to find anybody willing to help my wife prepare for the written test for the learner's permit. They always said just learn it on-line. She did not believe me until she contacted a Russian speaking driving school and they told her to learn it on-line and then come back when you have the learner's permit. So that is what we are going to do. That way she doe not have to translate or I do not have to translate in an "emergency" situation. For the sake of the marriage I would highly recommend getting someone to teach the new immigrant to drive.

Good luck,

Dave

Thank you Dave

I should have my learners permit this week and start driving classes. I know how to drive but I think taking classes will be much better;-)

Wow when I called around for my wife, most had programs for adult drivers and most of those were willing to adjust it per need. I guess there was more competition in my area, forcing them to offer more options.

Hey there

Another one who got a couple of lessons with a driving instructor once I got here. I had been driving for many years but, as a previous poster stated, wanted to make sure that I got rid of some bad habits in order to be able to pass the test, and to ensure I knew all the rules in practise. The instructor I had was excellent, gave me information on exactly what I would be tested on and techniques that would be useful, and leant me some cones to practise a specific part of the test that you have to take in Ohio.

I did a quick google and found these two in North Virginia:

http://www.ezdrivingschoolva.com/

http://www.aaplusdrivingschool.com/adults.html

Looks like it they have adult lessons too, so might be a good place to start?

Good luck with the search!
