Fortunately, we left the house very early because traffic in-bound on I-66 was horrendous. It took 2.5 hours to go the 60-ish miles to the Washington, DC local office in Fairfax, VA. We got there only a couple of minutes before our appointment time.

Our DAO was a nice young woman from eastern Europe, I think. I would say she was reserved, but friendly. She called us in, and although we had separate interview times for my husband and son a half hour apart, we were all interviewed together at the same time. A few of you will recall this interview was re-scheduled (ahem) and our new letter said we would be videotaped, but I saw no evidence of this in her office.

She asked us together:

So this is a second marriage for both of you?

She said she had my husband's divorce certificate, but didn't see mine in the file (I am 100% sure I submitted it with both the I-129F and the I-485), so I gave her another court-certified copy.

She asked my husband:

Was your arrival last fall your first trip to America?

What is your date of birth?

Where were you born?

What is your mother's name?

What is your father's name?

Where are you employed?

and all the terrorist/communist/public assistance questions...

She asked our son:

What is your name?

How is school going?

What grade are you in?

What is your birthday?

Where were you born? (the same village as your dad?)

Do you know your mother's name? (He answered with my name, and the DAO smiled and said "No, she's your stepmother. Do you know your real mother's name?” His dad helped him out with that... they split when he was 5, and he's 10 now.)

She asked if we have photos. I got out the album of photos I put together of the past year since they’ve been here. She looked at a few pages of it. She stopped at photos of us at Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty (we flew into JFK and went there, even though we were dog tired, before driving home to VA). And she stopped at a photo of our son in his Halloween costume last year (he was a Ninja, only 10 days in the US and trying to pronounce “trick or treat”… lol). She just asked if it was this year. I told her no, he thought he was too old to go trick-or-treating this year (he’s 10) and she laughed, saying that her 14 year old daughter went this year. I offered her some print-outs of photos on paper for our file, which she took… there were about 20 sheets with 2 - 4 pictures per sheet… I thought she would just take a few, but she took them all!

Then she asked if we had documentation of joint accounts, etc… I gave her copies of all our joint financial stuff, like car title, 2005 tax return, joint savings and checking statements, joint credit card statements, boarding passes from a trip out west last spring to meet my sister and her family, insurance docs showing they had been added to my health insurance from work, beneficiary designations from my retirement, etc… She seemed happy with all that. I forgot to give her the huge stack of copies of medical and dental bills… dang…. all that copying for nothing! She didn’t ask for anything on our son, but I had a stack of copies of papers from school that my husband and I had both signed: report cards, a paper saying we had read the school’s computer policy, permission slips, etc…

She seemed very appreciative of the photos and copies already being done so she didn’t have to copy things herself.

At some point (it’s a bit of a blur), she said there was a problem with the vaccine supplements... :o the civil surgeon hadn't checked off the box that says something like "this person is adequately vaccinated". She said it looked like they had had all the required vaccines, so she would go check with her supervisor to see if they could let it go as it was, but he/she said no. <_< So she asked when we could have the civil surgeon correct or redo it and I answered immediately, “Today!”. She seemed a little surprised and also pleased, and said she would be there til 4 pm and we could come back. She also told us before we left that she would be able to issue approvals with the new vaccine supplement documents, which eased the blow a little. So we left and I got on the cell phone immediately and kicked up a little dust :ranting: (my husband and son told me to calm down… lol), we drove to Winchester where the civil surgeon was, got the re-done forms in sealed envelopes – and an apology from them- and drove back to USCIS (134 miles roundtrip). She had written a note on our appointment letters for them to let us back in that same day, so we went right back upstairs to reception.

She called us back in after a bit of a wait in the waiting area (where my husband and I noticed we were practically the only ones without a lawyer, and with 6 bags of stuff!). She seemed happy with the new forms and took my husband’s and son’s passports and stamped them with the temporary I-551’s (she had removed the I-94’s in the first visit). She said that all of the security checks were done and so we could expect the greencards in the mail in about 3 – 4 weeks. She asked my husband for his EAD card, and told us about the Removal of Conditions 90 days before the 2 years are up. And that was it!

Overall, other than that side trip to Winchester, it was a positive experience.

So to you all at VJ, thanks so much for all the help and reassurance. And to those who are waiting, best wishes and good luck…

Thanks Lal Brandow and Maples!

Yes, it was a big relief, especially after the missed interview disaster! When we got the second interview letter with the note about being videotaped, I wondered if they were punishing us, but I don't think so...

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you both!

Woooo Hooooooo!

Big congrats, I know how worried you were.. and then you get there and see what a disaster 99% of these cases seem to be (ie, you were the only one really prepared!) and you should just *know* it's going to be a walk in the park.

I'm so impressed with your prep--now you can just keep on saving things up for your I-751 and it won't even be a sweat...
