Hi,

My wife and stepson arrived here in July on K-1 (fiance) and K-2 visas. She and I are now married, and we've already received a Notice of Action for their Adjustment of Status, as well as for their I-765s. However, I did not get them social security numbers prior to the expiration of their I-94s. So, my question is: What do I now need to do so they can get social security numbers?

If I end up having to request ssn's for reasons other than employment, what are considered valid reasons? For example, getting health insurance, opening a bank account, etc. -- all require an ssn.

TIA,

Paul

You will have to wait for the EAD or greencard to get a SSN now....

Nothing else you can do.... SSA will not issue on because you want to open a bank account... get health insurance... etc

You can do all of those things without a SSN you just have to look around for someone willing to do it...

You should have applied for the SSN prior to the 76th day (I think it is) of your I-94 ... Anytime after that they will not issue a SSN card ... Unfortunately you missed the boat on that and now have to wait till you get the EAD or greencard ...

K-1 VISA
08-05-06 - Married in Sycamore IL

AOS / EAD
08-24-06 - AOS/EAD mail to Chicago (Day 1)

11-06-06 - GC & Welcome Letter arrive in Mail (Day 75)

I-751
09-23-08 - Sent Package via USPS (Day 1)
01-02-09 - Received GC in mail (with wrong Resident Since date) (Day 101)

Thanks for the information. Can you tell me how long it typically takes to get the EAD after the NOA? They have their biometrics exam in about a week.

Thanks.
