Quotes at time of story, top stories today: Jobs Data Bullish for the Market 08:43

08:43 ET (03-Nov-06)

Jobs Data Bullish for the Market:

October nonfarm payrolls rose a smaller than expected 92,000. However, the September increase was revised sharply higher, from an originally reported 51,000 to 148,000. That 51,000 level was considered a possible sign of a significant slowdown in growth. Now, the September level is above original expectations and the trend the past six months of about 125,000 per month.

The data overall are therefore stronger than expected and wipe out the previous concerns of a significant slowdown in payroll growth.

Wages are rising as well. Hourly earnings were up 0.4%. This, of course, is a mixed bag. It supports consumer spending but is also somewhat inflationary. Our take is that it is bullish for stocks because it will alleviate concerns that consumer spending will weaken. Payrolls are rising at a 1% annual rate, and hourly earnings are rising at a 4% to 5% rate (up 3.9% over the past year but at a higher rate lately). Together, that provides plenty of fuel to keep consumers heading to the stores.

Underscoring the strong data is the fact that the unemployment rate dropped to just 4.4%.

The data are bullish for the stock market in that there is little sign of any weakening from the trend of recent months.

The election is over. Republicans lost. However, here is a little economic news from the U.S. Government.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the unemployment rate for October 2006 was 4.4%, which is one of the lowest since Bush took office. The lowest monthly unemployment rate in Bush’s tenure was his first month in office when it was 4.2%.

The average unemployment rate for the first 10 months of 2006 is 4.7%.

The average unemployment rate was 4% for the Year 2000, Clinton’s final year in office. It was actually 3.9 percent for each of the final four months of 2000.

And yet.....

After laying off 300-400 workers within the past 2 months, Foxconn is again (allegedly....just rumour so far) laying off 300 workers this Sunday.... I may end up being one of them. There are currently 20 repair techs on 3rd shift. They want to reduce it to 10 (fact). There are 25 or so on 1st shift; they want 12 (fact). Same for 2nd shift. Then, when business picks up again, they'll wonder why they have such a hard time finding good repair techs who will work for low wages....

National numbers don't mean sh!t. Take a look at the Midwest unemployment rate, then compare it to other areas. The Midwest is the "Forgotten" region of the US, when it comes to jobs.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

They already plan to replace them with folks from INDIA.

There was an article in the local san jose mercurynews a while, about the DOT.COM bust

The DOT.com burts didn't die it just MOVE TO ASIA

Now if you go anywhere in Asia, specially in India, Malaysia, Singapore, You will se lot of IT companies. And in some instances The US companies are helping build the infracture of that country (our Tax$$$ at work) so they can set up branch there for CHEAP labor

That's the republican way/ the new business structure of corporate America, ship it overseas, and get tax break for shipping american jobs there.

Outsourcing word became taboo for awhile now the new word it

I stand corrected on the numbers though. I thought I read somewhere on briefing.com that it was a historical low. Still great news considering the recession the tax cuts pulled us out of. Bush cut taxes and tax revenues have increased. I know that number is hard for all you libs to grasp but that's a fact. Actually would be nice to see the Dems raise taxes since it would lead to their defeat in future elections.

Millions of temp and other junk jobs have been created over the past few years. Light up already, will ya'?

I'm certainly not going to say temp jobs are as good as full-time regular employee positions, but calling them junk goes too far, IMO. Plenty of people I know are in temp positions that pay well over $20/hour. That's not junk money (well maybe except in New Jersey lol).

Yeah, PlatyPius raised an important point. Where I live median household income is in the 6-figures and I am not (by myself) so... I guess I should complain :innocent:

yay economy!!!!!

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I should. Maybe I'll get up to median income via the settlement.

The tax cuts are about the only thing Bush has done right. If he lets those get rolled back , his presidency will be a total loss as far as I'm concerned.

I agree he has to veto any attempt to roll them back. I can't imagine the Dems would be stupid enough to try and get them rolled back. But who knows.
