Ok, so first of all i have a k-1 visa.

I'm moving to florida to marry my fiancee in a couple weeks and i'm kinda lost on how to get around some things.

I notice people are saying to apply for SSN after the marriage, is this just aimed at the people taking the surname of their fiance ? Seeing as i am a male i will keep my own name, so im guessing this doesnt really matter ?

Also, i need proof of citizenship to get a SSN, so will my k-1 and I94 be valid proof ?

finally, To acquire a marriage license in florida i need a SSN, how do i get this if im supposed to wait until after the wedding ? obviously if my first question is irrelevant then so is this one.

sorry if im not making much sense, it's late and im tired but i cant get this subject off my mind haha

thanks

1. It is best imo to get SSN before marriage. That prevents silly SSA employees from thinking that a K- becomes a K-3 when they marry (they don't).

2. You are not a citizen so you cannot show any proof of citizenship to get SSN. It is important to understand that you are not a citizen, because falsely claiming you are will get you banned from the US for life.

3. A K-1 is entitled to a SSN so you can show your passport, visa, and I-94, yes.

3. You do not need a SSN to get married. There is a federal law about this. In some states they say you must give SSN if you have one, but if you don't have one, you can attest to that fact and still get married.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

SSN is for everyone.

Not for women or name changing.

You want a job? You want a SSN.

I know i need a SSN, i was just wondering why people say to wait after the wedding.

Thanks for the help everyone :)
