To I-551 Stamp or not

My wife's GC was finally approved today, however she is leaving next week to go back home to the Ukraine for a few weeks. I know she will probably not get her card in the mail before she leaves. She does have her combo EAD/AP card which expires in July. Should she go by and get a I-551 stamp or not? I know we will have to show her plane tickets that she leaves next week. I was getting everyone's thoughts if we should get her stamp or not. Thanks

Yes, that is the exact reason for them having a stamp. AP is not the same as I-551. She should get the stamp and not carry the EAD with her anymore.

A few options:

1. Go for the ADIT ("I-551") stamp at infopass. Free except for your time, will probably be granted with proof of impending travel but not guaranteed.

2. If you're staying home, wait for the green card and FedEx it to her. Might cost $25 or so.

3. She can just travel with the EAD/AP card, but if so she should leave and reenter the US sometime within the following 12 months in order to make sure her status is correctly registered with CBP.

Her AP is cancelled now that she is a GC holder. Get the stamp.

YES

The bad news is that the EAD and AP are cancelled when the Green Card is issued and are no longer valid. Make an info pass appointment, explain what is happening and see if they give you the stamp

EADs and APs are CANCELLED as soon as Green cards are approved, she cannot use these. Typically they are turned in at the time of an approved interview but sometimes they forget to ask, or perhaps the grean cards were not approved immediately, OR, as in our case, the EAD and AP came after the green cards were received.

Going to Ukraine would cost $100 or so. It is illegal to send them by Fedex or UPS. Fedex and UPS will not accept them and Ukraine does not allow any form of identifying documents to be delivered from a non-government agency.

Another possibility, but only if she is going to be in Ukraine for a while, is to ask USCIS to send the green card to the consulate in Kiev for her to pick up. Could take more than a month and she would have to go to Kiev. Better to get the stamp

Thanks...but of course there was no interview for our GC as our AOS was sent CSC. I have already setup an InfoPass appointment before she leaves. I am going to the Ukraine for a week in March and coming home with her. I will bring it with me when I go, however I want to be prepared just in case she needs to come early for some reason.

oh, send the greencard to a needy member in TadJeekistan?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
