Tip for police certificates

So... following my VJ's advise I begun the document gathering before packet 3 arrives from MTL. First off my list, the police certificate (which will be name search only since I don't have a criminal record).

We live in Edmonton, so I called Edmonton Police Services and asked for the information yada yada yada. Well, it costs 55 canadian dollars and it's ready in (please sit down) six weeks. I almost fainted. After that, I called the St. Albert Police (suburb of Edmonton, quite nice and uppity), and it costs 34.80 and it's ready in 2 days. Holy!

So my 'tip' is to try and get the police certificates in smaller cities. They are less busy, they are apparently more amicable; and at the end of the day they perform Canada-wide searches.

Hope this helps someone, and if not at least now I feel like we are contributing to the forums instead of bombarding you guys with our questions!!!

Happy & lovy, L&B.

All depends where you live, various through out the country. Best to call the detachment or station ahead of time. Soem charge $$$, some do not, some take minutes, others take weeks. The police cert is a weekly question here on VJ, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Be sure that whatever detachment you go to does your record search both locally and using CPIC (Canadian Police Information Centre). A name search locally isn't enough. Call ahead and be sure they use CPIC and you should be in good hands!

Can you get Record Checks at local police stations? I thought it was only RCMP. That would be convenient because the nearest RCMP outpost to my home is in the nearest city 2 hours away! (Not in Kamloops BC anymore)

From the readings on VJ, it appears so. Ensure it states on the form that it has been conducted Canada Wide!!

It really depends on where you live. In some areas only the RCMP do it, in other areas locals can do it, and in the GTA, only the Commissionaire's will do it.

Call around and find out, and make sure that what you're getting is the Canada Wide name check.
