Reading this I had flashbacks of my citizenship interview some years back. The interviewer I had was sarcastic and obviously wanted to do other other things that day.I started answering the questions correctly and I got the impression that they were getting annoyed. Then he started to get really in depth with the government questions. This kept going on and then a few I could not answer. Finally he said I didn't past and well I lost it.

I told him as veteran of the US Military I had been shot at, rolled over mines and I'm still here. I looked him square in the eye and told him sternly "it's amazing what people like us have to go through because we love this great country".The expression on their face was pricless as I clearly was not the high point of their day

I agree that the relationship does seem to have it's oddities... but if they really asked if she was a spy? Seriously a Canadian spy? My reply to that would've been, Yes and a suppressed Sig mosquito is my weapon of choice for taking out officials who deny my entry. The guy was obviously picked on too much in HS and gets a power trip working in his position. No worries soon Obama will declare everyone US citizens.

We spent more time trying to make head or tails out of some of those ambiguous questions asked on the N400, and memorizing all ten pages of it. Then gathering the evidence to back up some of those key questions. Her interview lasted 45 minutes, ironically with that ridiculous English and civics test that only lasted two minutes.

With knowledge that she had to read that oath aloud, she had to practice saying "potentate", not a very common English word, as opposed to reading, "II am a good cook."

Stepdaughter's five year interview lasted under ten minutes, the vast majority if her N-400 had "N/A's" typed in.

See a lot of people on this board making a big deal out of that civics and English test, when knowing that N-400 is the most important part of your interview.

How you conduct yourself is also judged, the expressions on your face, how briefly and accurately you can answer questions with hesitations. 100% honesty is a must, if you contradict yourself, will raise red flags.

It takes practice to do an interview, that is exactly how our legal system works. Without that practice, even by even being 100% honest, will raise red flags. Can't get emotional, have to remain clam, and always polite.

Could this be the problem?

Good news, I am in the oath scheduling queue! I believe I know why the IO was suspicious of the number of days I was out of the country. I reviewed my application and in the box where it asks how many days you've been out of the country in the past 5 years, the number I entered more than 600 days. My citizenship application is based on 3 years of marriage and I was not a resident in the US for 2 out of the 5 years. When the IO saw that the number was high, it roused his suspicion and persuaded him to have my application reviewed further. I'm glad I passed the test :)

Another reason that those applying for naturalization based on 3 years of LPR while married to a USC should go through the N-400 crossing out "5 years" and writing "3 years", then answer the questions as if it said "3 years".

Feel the correct answer to put in that how many days out of the country for the three year is N/A. At the advice of my very experienced immigration attorney, said not to change the form, just put in the number of days. For us was 411 days.

Problem started when Bush put Emilio in charge of the new USCIS because he helped Bush win the election. Guy is a Cuban refugee and not very competent in English. But even three acting directors of the USCIS haven't changed that N-400 form.

Breaking my small brain now, besides the 3 and 5 year difference in that question, was a third reason that question is ambiguous, maybe I need more coffee this morning, can't think of it. Table underneath does say since becoming an LPR, just having a total box underneath would solve this question

Finding more and more people that are working for the USCIS can't even speak English, can really appreciate the comments made by one that served this country. Being judged by a new immigrant as a veteran of a foreign war. Was my birthday yesterday, thought about my buddies that never made it to the age 19, must be lucky. Was awfully difficult to be nice to some idiot working for the USCIS with the power of your life and loved ones over you.

Still feel very strongly, we should meet with a board, and should be a requirement that all IO's be tested on the USCIS instructions. Anything below 100% would be a failure.
