  1. 1. Should welfare be cut across the board in America?

    • Yes. Across the board!
    • No. I support cuts but they must be targeted and done thoughtfully.
    • No. Leave welfare alone!

[quote name=^_^' timestamp='1359402652' post='5946075]Minimum wage jobs are no way to raise a family. If you're on minimum wage, your life should be uncomfortable enough where you have the incentive to go to college and/or get vocational training. I'd be supportive of a society that pays for all that but people on minimum wage must know their life sucks.

Minimum wage is no way to raise a family but having to work 16 hours out of the day certainly isn't a way to raise a family either. We don't pay for training in this country so people may find themselves on the lower end of the pay scale. Certainly that should not make them worse off than living on the dole. There's got to be some dignity that one derives from getting ones ####### out of the bed in the morning. And there ain't no dignity in working to find oneself worse off than a person on welfare.

No, the class with the most debt as % of their income.

This only works if pay or renumeration rises faster than inflation. Having to repay a smaller percentage of your income isn't much use, if everything else now costs much more than thanks to inflation.

The last time this country decided to leave it to the churches, we had the disease infested tenements of the five points.

Now that we are about to give all immigrants a path to citizenship, along with free medical care, that should no longer be a problem. Besides, we have things like antibiotics and vaccinations to deal with disease, along with a better understanding of disease.

Well, then it'll never happen. Texas will make sure of that. They'd never vote a sane person into office down there. Sane people scare them.

Exactly, I just don't see any benefit to society at large by impoverishing people so much that their only option is go work for the likes of walmart, who offer only crappy 32 hour a week jobs that are near impossible to work another job around and don't even pay enough to cover rent, let alone luxuries such as food and electricity. If a company wants to only employ people part time, then employ them part time, not this rubbish, of calling a job part time, but requiring full time availability.

Yes, blame Walmart for raising the living standards of so many Americans. Let's see, we have one group of people over here, that won't work for Walmart because they won't bend over for the unions, and we have another group of people over there, that are working and providing for themselves and families. Which one looks more like the America we want? It's retail, the hours suck, but since the hippies ruined education in America, that is about the only jobs high school graduates (and many college graduates) are qualified to do.

Ya I got it,, the hippies and commies are to blame for everything.

p.s. having to resort to welfare to provide for your family because the likes of walmart have gamed the system so much is not providing for ones self.

Good lord, raise by lowing salaries and making it harder for smaller businesses to compete. Okay dude, what ever you say!

Of course, but that's the thing, Americans pride themselves on being innovators, yet don't seem to understand that forcing round pegs in square holes just to survive is not going to create a society where people are not afraid of taking risks. People who say that people doing retail jobs, need to get a better education, don't seem to understand how difficult it is to contemplate borrowing thousands of dollars to attend school when somebody is barely making enough to pay rent while working a minimum wage job. I don't mind that companies like walmart only wishing to pay barely above minimum wage, but what I do mind is that they make it so difficult for people to do anything else with lives.

At what point did part time jobs, become virtual full time jobs, but without any of the usual benefits?

Pick any program you like and imagine an across the board % payments cut. Would you support that?

Personally, I think an across the board cut has the advantage that you can't "game" it but the disadvantage of being thoughtless.

Well pick your poison .. Cut and soon those in real need will surface. Those not ... Tax the ####### out of them .....

All those small businesses you whine about pay less in salary and benefits, and less opportunity for advancement, than a major retailer, any major retailer. A large corporation undergoes more scrutiny, than mom and pop businesses, and therefore, probably have a higher compliance with labor laws than somebody that has one or two employees.

Of course, but that's the thing, Americans pride themselves on being innovators, yet don't seem to understand that forcing round pegs in square holes just to survive is not going to create a society where people are not afraid of taking risks. Blah, blah, blah. Take your American bashing commie propaganda elsewhere. This is America. Adapt, or die.
