Then they'll see the polling where he soundly destroys any Democrat candidate and back him anyway, just so that they can win.

If they were concerned about polling, they'd support what has majority support. Republicans do not do that. They do orthodoxy. And orthodoxy says that thou shalt not increase the minimum wage and thou shalt not be seen too close to Obama and thou certainly shalt not give praise or credit of any kind to Obama.

[quote name=^_^' timestamp='1359428038' post='5946987]idk, dude.

romney was the grandpappy of obamacare.

And he ran from it as fast and far as he could. Besides, Romney had three things going for him:

1) He was the runner-up in 2008 and the runner-up usually has the best shot of getting the nomination. See McCain 2008 - he was the runner-up in 2000.

2) No other serious candidate ran for the nomination. You had a bunch of clowns, Huntsman (an unknown Obama bureaucrat) and Mittens. The GOP nominated Romney because there really was no viable alternative to him.

3) Money. Mittens has money.

After 8 years of Obama, the GOP may well decide to go with anyone that can win, as long as they call themselves a Republican.

But that is what they did in 2012 - trade orthodoxy for electability. Didn't work out so well, did it? And they'll remember that.

No they didn't. <_<

Every candidate that lasted more than a week or two headed to the right to give the appearance of giving "the base" what they wanted. Romney then tried walking back what he said in the primaries and lost all credibility as a result.

Rinse and repeat in 2016.

 Not likely with a stronger candidate field.

And pragmatism may win out, with the GOP opting to go with the candidate that can beat the Democrat, rather than a strict adherent to GOP dogma.

Then again, whoever they go with, I don't think they'll be facing Hillary Clinton. ;)

Hard to tell whether Hillary will run. Think it depends on what the next couple of years bring. But if you count on Republican pragmatism, I think you'll be disappointed. Might be wrong. The party could decide to put the Tea Party in its place but then they risk that the Tea Party freaks go off on their own because they surely do not do rational things. If that happens, it's over for the GOP until they can consolidate a majority reaching far into the center. That would be a different GOP that I might be interested in.

They'll remember the minimum wage and the bromance with Obama. Both are deadly sins for any real Republican.

 He is positioning himself to lead that ever-diminishing group of sane, moderate republicans! This issue will help elect democrats in NJ at the same time that it helps to ensure the tea-party will nix the governor's chances of securing a nod for the GOP nomination for president. Sounds win/win to me!

Hillary will not run. If she does, she'll just end up humiliated in the primaries again.

If Hillary runs she will easily secure the nomination. And seeing how much blind, irrational hatred the tea party has for her it will probably guarantee her the presidency as well!
