Chris Christie proposes reasonable compromise on minimum wage bill, New Jersey Democrats say NO!

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie vetoed a Democratic proposal to raise the minimum wage and instead proposed hiking it by $1 an hour over the next three years.

On the last day he could take action on the minimum wage bill, Christie said the state economy was too weak to handle the Democrats' proposed $1.25 increase all at once. He also rejected a provision in the bill that would have mandated automatic yearly increases in the minimum wage.

...

It is now up to state lawmakers to decide if they go along with Christie's changes, but the bill sponsor, Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver, immediately ruled that out. She and Senate President Stephen Sweeney have also drafted plans to put a minimum wage increase and automatic yearly adjustments on the ballot in November.

a dollar an hour over three years? 33 cents per year? bwahahahaha.

That's more than minimum wage employees would be offered in raises by their employers. It's 3.3% for those making $10.00 an hour. More for those making less. 3.3% is not too shabby. I know plenty of people working for more than minimum wage that have done worse than 3% over the last few years.

Besides, the Dems in NJ asked for $1.25 and they're getting a counter-offer of a phased in $1.

Instead of jumping at it, they're going to put this on the ballot to drive up Democratic turnout in 2013.

Which is what this is really about.

It's no different than what Republicans do when they put gay marriage on the ballot to drive up evangelical turnout.

And it will backfire on them.

Anyone not on minimum wage is likely to view Governor Christie's position as fiscally responsible and it may even strengthen his position.

That, and it will help him turn around out-of-state Republican opinion following his perceived faux pas in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Where have you been? Real Americans know that any increase in the minimum wage is a job killer. It's un-Republican to advocate for minimum wage increases. Christie is done. He's got no shot at the 2016 GOP nomination. None.

Seriously, here's a GOP governor who PUT IN WRITING a proposal to up the min wage by a full dollar over three years.

That's a no-no in the modern GOP.

But all the Democrats in NJ can do is whine instead of recognize a victory when they see one.

You're just petrified that the GOP might realize that they can reclaim the centre ground, with a candidate that has proven popular across the political spectrum, and who will crush Hillary Clinton in an election.

That is, if he doesn't literally do so beforehand.

Good point.

I'm not petrified at the prospect of a sane GOP. I'd welcome such a development very much.

But, he has managed to agree an increase in the minimum wage AND p!ss State Democrats off. That takes some finesse. Question is, will the GOP remember the minimum wage, or the State Democrats having a hissy fit? ;)

They'll remember the minimum wage and the bromance with Obama. Both are deadly sins for any real Republican.
