I'm from Minnesota, so fishing is kind of in my DNA lol.

Two particular incidents always made me laugh; there's a lake called Lake Johanna in Arden Hills, Minnesota, that was our primary fishing spot for around ten years or so, if not longer. It's perfect for pan fish fishing; bluegill, crappie, bass, perch, sunfish, etc.

I had to have been around 12 or 13, and we (him, myself, and my younger brother, who was about 9) were all on the boat in Lake Johanna, and he had just caught this decent sized bluegill. If you ain't ever caught a bluegill, it's a pretty docile fish, and small. But that thing's dorsal fin has spines on it that are like syringes; you have to hold it a very specific way, otherwise you're gonna get stabbed. Well, he ended up dropping this thing and it's flopping around EVERYWHERE in the front of the boat at his feet; his unshoed, unprotected feet. It must have flipped back or something, because he managed to grab it and toss it back in the lake, but we look down the the front of the boat is just COVERED in blood; he's got a nice slice on his foot from where this thing's spines slashed his foot open like a tire.

What does he do? Pfft, he wrapes it in a paper towel and we fished for another hour or two before pulling up anchor and going home. It was like watching Hercules get his #### handed to him by, well, a small fish. :P

Another doesn't have too much to do with fishing, but we fished a bit on the trip. I was older, in my teens, probably around 15 or 16, and we were out at Lake Independence in Maple Plain, MN. It was the whole family plus my best friend at the time, and we decided to do some tubing. For those of you who don't know, it's simple; you tie a tube to the back of the boat, get on it, let out the line, and get pulled behind the boat. Well, let's just say I was entirely appropriately dressed for the occasion. We got a decent speed happening, and then all of a sudden I feel a, uh, interesting feeling in my nethers. No, not that feeling, perverts. :P Like I was feeling a bit too free. I look down, and my shorts are GONE. My boxers were luckier, they snagged on my foot before being completely ripped off, but I was pretty much free-styling it on the tube. I yelled to my Dad who was at the wheel of the boat, but over the engine and the wind, he couldn't hear anything I was saying. So, I did the only thing I could do; I let go. Now, water at around 40 kph gets pretty solid. Know how you skip a stone? Yeah, the same thing happens with humans at the right speeds. I did not know this fact. I let go, and that's when I learned a physics lesson; the wind caught my upper body, which was made easier by the wearing of a life jacket, and sort of curved me upwards. I hit the surface of the speeding water, quite literally groin first. Bare groin first. It felt like someone took everything down there in their fist and just yanked with all their strength. And then I was airborne, having skipped on the surface of the water. Lesson #2; when sudden drag has been created on the lower half of relatively vertical object, intertia will cause the top of that object to then go downwards. I was airborne for maybe one second before my face, which was previously on top, became the bottom and SLAMMED into the water. I somersaulted once underwater before finally surfacing.

Thank the Lord in all His wisdom, my underwear was still hanging onto my foot, and I figured before any fish got the bright idea to go after the worm, I might as well cover up. And my family and my friend only saw my underwear bouncing on my ankle, but they could guess what happened after that and...needless to say, that was the end of the day for me. :P

And now back to you lol.

my only "bad" fish story is one time i was casting with a diving lure and it hit a branch just under the water while reeling it back in. it felt like a strike, so i jerked the rod to set the hook. with much dismay, i saw the lure come out of the water and straight at me.

i hooked my thigh.....so i cut the treble hook off and went back to fishing. went to the hospital about 4 hours later to get the hook removed. :P

Great stories, keep em coming...

In my journeys I have...

Hooked a wind surfer by his nads while trolling (The idiot thought he was gonna jump the small wake generated by my boat doing 2).

My friend hooked my other friend in the eye lid, almost losing an eyeball...

Dropped about 1000 dollars worth of equipment overboard...

Almost killed by the wake of the Queen Mary in New York's Ambrose channel...

Fought for elbow space on the Coney Island pier with about a hundred other kids...

Watch my friend drop my other friends trophy sea-bass catch while trying to measure it....

Written about a thousand parody songs while fishing...

Fun fishing facts about NYC...

15% of the liquid in the NY Harbor is neither water or oil...

Only 1.98% of the fish caught here has 3 eyes...

NYC has it's own species of fish, The Coney Island White Fish. (google that).

All kidding aside, NY state and NYC has some of the greatest fishing in the world. And a lot of folks don't know it.

anyone doing any fishing lately?

Hurricane Sandy put an end to my NY Bight fishing season. As the marina where I dock my boat is destroyed...right before the fall Striper run....

As a fellow Boatie, I'm sorry for the loss of your boat. We were fortunate here in the Caribbean and had a mild hurricane season (for a change). Considering that my wife and I live aboard, she of course is always with me when we go out fishing. We were circling a huge commercial refrigerator floating in the water off St. John, VI. when we hooked into our first (and to date only) blue Marlin. Gabriela was fighting the fish and survivred the Marlin's initial run. We were closing the distance between the fish and the boat when the Marlin took off again in a spectacular tailwalk. This was Gabriela's first glimps at how big this fish was and when seeing the size of the Marlin, she yelled for me to grab the rod as she causually just dropped the rod ondeck. Of course the Penn 80 reel and rod were over the railing and gone before I could get to it. I was speechless and had never in my life seen anything like this before. Gabriela of course was busy explaining (in spanish) how the fish was too big and was going to drag her overboard because she was so small. Whatta ya gunna do??

There are some fish photos in my pictures for anyone interested. I'll post more as we fish a lot living down here including a so-so photo of the marlin doing it's tailwalk..

Rebel, thanks but my boat wasn't lost lol. The marina however, is in pretty bad shape. (you ever watch Forrest Gump? The Jenny?) I got lucky. I will post some pics in my profile when I get a chance.

I'm sorry about your loss of equipment. But it's a great story.

More importantly...How good was that roast pig in those pictures...?

I caught a sturgeon once. It was only about 5 feet or so, just a teenager.

Ah yes.. Christmas in Santo Domingo.. The roast pig was great.. get this.. Cost 1,200 pesos (about $30.00 US). Did you notice the way they are roasted? A piece of corrigated tin is layed on the sidewalk. They cover the tin with Hardwood Carbon, put a pole through the pig and use two cinder blocks to hold the pole. Unbelievable.. You'ld be arrested if you did this in the states. Anyway, I'll post more pics and I'm glad I got it wrong about your boat.. Thats no way for a man to lose his boat...

if I lost the boat, I would have been covered by insurance...woulda been shopping for a new boat. But just as well, I'm sentimentally attached to her. Sorta like a second wife she is...

When I was married to my first hubby his parents had a waterfront cottage near Briggsville, Wisconsin, on a sleepy body of water called a slough, which is, as I remember it, a long, narrow lake with a slight current. Actually it was part of Neenah Creek that had been dammed by the Native Americans for growing wild rice. The western bank was ringed by cottages. The opposite side was swampy woods populated by deer and hoot owls.

It was morning, the mist was still rising from the water. The sun was warm and there was no breeze. It was quiet. You could hear a pin drop. My husband and his dad had taken the boat out to do some early morning fishing. I'm not sure the actual name, skiff, v-hull aluminum something? It had a small motor, and oars. They had rowed and drifted some distance away to the Big Bend when my mother-in-law and I wandered down to the pier with our coffee.

Suddenly the silence was split with GET YOUR LINE OUTTA THE WAY!!! #@@$%$#@ PULL IN THAT @#$$# ANCHOR!!! @$$%##$ DON'T TOUCH THAT!!!! GET THAT OAR OUTTA THE WAY!!! $%#%$%#$ :ranting: %%$#@#$

My MIL and I are watching in amusement as my FIL is playing a fish that is literally pulling the boat back toward us! My husband was dutifully trying to get all objects out of the way of the line while trying not to rock the boat too much all the while his agitated, red-faced father was cussing loud enough for everyone to hear him a mile away!

We held our breath the moment when dad was shouting at son to net the fish! My poor hubby was dammed if he made one slip and lost his dad's prize. Judging by the cussing he was certainly between the net and a hard place. All ended well with a sigh of relief when the fish was landed. The boat had been pulled about the distance of a couple football fields at least, all the way back to the pier. FIL was out of breath, smiling from ear to ear and hubby held up his catch. It was a blue channel catfish. I don't remember the exact weight but 29 pounds comes to mind.

So that's my best fishing story. Well, there was one other, when I caught a 4 pound small mouth bass when I was 8 months pregnant with my first daughter....
