A proposed ban on sales of assault weapons would be defeated in the U.S. Senate unless some lawmakers changed their current views, based on a Bloomberg review of recent lawmaker statements and interviews.

At least six of the 55 senators in the Democratic caucus have expressed skepticism or outright opposition to a ban, the review found. That means Democrats wouldn’t have a 51-vote majority to pass the measure, let alone the 60 needed to break a Republican filibuster to bring it to a floor vote.

Actually, assault rifles made after 1986 aren't allowed to be owned by non-FFL holders.

Semi-automatic sporting rifles, however, are.

Assault rifles have to be select-fire in order to actually be assault rifles. Calling civilian rifles assault rifles is fear-mongering. :)

What? You mean guns are already regulated?

For the record, I don't personally think banning any weapon, assault or otherwise, are very effective in prevention of gun crime. You glommed onto semantics that matter for jack. What is important, and my point, is the BS Obama having plans for taking every gun in civilian hands, and the rest of the crazy add on lunatic conspiracy theories that follow the gun confiscation conspiracy theory.

Obviously there are logical limits to what sort of weapons can be owned by private citizens and a logical debate should be possible as to what those might be.

One would think. But the reality is different. The gun nuts immediately fall into severe paranoid hysteria making any rational debate absolutely impossible.

And the anti-gun lawmakers just plough ahead without any discussion whatsoever, i.e. Governor Cuomo in NY.

So, who are the biggest obstacles to a sensible solution? The pro-gun advocates and their "guns everywhere, all the time" arguments, or the lawmakers passing legislation without debate?

Both sides need to see reason here, whereas both sides just seem content to offer knee-jerk reactions that do nothing to address the issues that would make a real difference.

There are no anti-gun lawmakers. That is a paranoid characterization right there. Which shows that you cannot have a meaningful debate with irrational, paranoid people. It's impossible. That's what I just said.

And that same level of reasoning is passing legislation, which is what I said.

Where are the sane, rational people dealing with the real issue here?

Not really. It's rational to restrict access to firearms when they are the weapon of choice and by far the #1 tool used in homicides.

IMO the panic is also largely being driven by first time buyers. I was on gunbroker today and one guy (clearly new) paid 1,000k for 5,000 rounds of .22LR Federal. Retail that goes for maybe 150-200USD and I don't think anyone who buys .22 regularly would even think of paying that.
