“Mr. President, hi, it’s Chris. Remember yesterday when you told me if I needed anything to call you on this line? I need gas.”

According to Christie, Obama asked how much, and the Republican governor said he employed a tactic familiar to anyone wholly unprepared to answer.

“I’m sorry sir, you’re breaking up.” Christie said, mimicking holding a cell phone to his ear. “Did you ask how much gas I need?”

He desperately looked around at his staff and Bob Martin, Department of Environmental Protection commissioner, offered: “Twelve million gallons?”

“Mr President we’ve looked at the problem, and we need 12 million gallons,’” Christie repeated.

Five minutes later “Unknown” flashed upon Christie’s phone, and Obama — saying “Hey Chris, it’s Barack” — told him the fuel would be ready.

Later on, Christie ran into a regulatory roadblock with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and again called Obama, at 11:45 at night.

“You’re not going to believe this but some idiot at FEMA ordered gas trucks to be turned around because I wouldn’t give it away for free,” Christie said. Then, according to Christie, Obama conferenced in FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate, and within 20 minutes the trucks were rolling.
