Husband and I thinking of returning to canada in the next 10 years

The title pretty much says it all. My husband and I have recently been thinking about moving to canada. Perhaps 2 -3 years after citizenship si received. We never planned it this way and would hate to redo the entire process over in Canada. But with us both living in both countries we actually have to admit the benefits of living in Canada vs the USA. I mean there's benefits both ways really but this is something we recently really started considering.

Has anyone after their CR-1/ 10 gc visas are approved started to think of this? It's all a theory right now and I don't know if we'd ever follow through I just can't shake how much I miss Canada. Sounds stupid doesn't it?

No, your feelings are understandable. I would just suggest if you are thinking of moving back to Canada to live at least waiting til your spouse can get US citizenship so you won't have to go through the process again on that end in the event later you guys want to move back to the US. Best of luck to you what ever you decide.

I'm beginning to wonder if Reese ever reads the posts beyond the first line.

CanadiaGirl, there are a number of members who have moved back. I know the search utility is a bit sucky, but you may be able to find them. If I happen across them I'll link them for you.

And, no, it definitely doesn't sound stupid.

I agree! I've lived here just over 2 years, and there are numerous things about Canada that make it a much better place to live. It's not silly at all, and in fact it's something my husband and I have talked about. There's a member on here who recently made the move to Canada with her husband and their dual citizen daughter. I've heard a number of people say that in Canada, you can basically just show up at the border with your US spouse and inform them that you intend to sponsor your spouse for permanent residence.. from what I hear, there's no problem with that. Of course, there'd still be paperwork to file etc. but the separation part isn't necessary like it is with coming here. Obviously we haven't tried that, but I've come across others here and have talked to people who have.

I'd say weigh your options and the pros and cons of living in either country. Me, I'd go back in a minute and my husband would happily move there too. It's good to have options, especially with all the uncertainty here. Canada seems to be much more friendly and civilized, doesn't it?!

My wife is the USC citizen and I am Canadian. She came to Canada in May 2003, we married in the US in Dec 2003, we applied and I got GC and we moved to the States in 2006, and moved back to Canada in 2011 for economic reasons. Neither of us can wait to get back to the US. Opposite story from you. It is all in preference.

DEFINITELY take the advice and act on your desire to get citizenship in the US before you leave. We did not expect to leave - ever - and then didn't have time when we had to go. It would have made going back much easier now.

As to coming to Canada, you can move back anytime of course and then even after she applies she can visit for 6 months of the year - my wife went back and forth to the US regularly while her application was in processing and it was fine with Canada. The six month thing is sometimes interpreted as six months of the year and sometimes for a six month period. It took about 6 months for her to get permanent resident status in Canada - very straightforward. We had to buy a health insurance plan for her from the US until she got her PR in Canada so the smart thing to do would be to give yourself lots of time and apply from the US before you go. That way she just has the three month wait for insurance when she gets her - as you will have.

Good luck wherever you end up.

Quite a few people have moved back, Treble did, and Colleens and her family did. both have posts somewhere around here about it. and they are also on the Road 2 Canada site i believe. Finding a Canadian equivalent of VJ to help you though is the hard part. No where have i found a site as informative as this one when it comes to immigrating back to Canada. It is doable, and you get to stay together the whole time and if i'm not mistaken you do all the paperwork in one shot. Not like the US version where you have to do things many times.

I think most of us have thought about this. Its natural to want to go home again! I love my life in the US, but I also miss Canada. I will probably spend the rest of forever trying to convince my husband to move to Canada. I don't think it will ever work, but I'll keep trying!
