Police certificate

Maybe if they have a local police dept that's why? I didn't have another option unless the sheriff or peace officers could do it. LOL

I’m pretty sure you’re right as to why. If the RCMP are the local police then they’ll do the checks but if not then they don’t.

My advice for newer Canadian members is to check out what’s available and go with what’s cheaper and/or faster.

For me the Commissionaires was $35 dollars cheaper for the 2 checks (CR-1 and CR-2) and was only going to take a couple of business days. Win-win in my case.

You do not have to go through the RCMP unless you have a criminal record in which case you'll need a fingerprint check done. Otherwise your local police department is fine so long as they search the CPIC or national records repository with your name(s) and date of birth. You can also use commissionaires: http://www.commissionaires.ca/ I went to my local police station in Mississauga and got a police check done in 5 minutes. It cost $45.

If you live in Toronto, you can go to Metro headquarters on College street. Cost $22 and you receive it in the mail 5 days later.

Pocheros, correct me if I am wrong but should everyone who is K1 status make a photocopy of their police certificate so they can include it in their Adjustment of Status (after marriage) application?

Nope, a police certificate is not included in the AOS package for K1s. Just needed for the day of the interview. Also, Montreal keeps originals of police certificates.

The consulate considers them valid for one year.

Hi Pocheros,

Thanks for this post. I have been wondering about how long the police certificates are valid because I read on the State Department website that you shouldn't start preparing your documents until receiving official instructions from the National Visa Center; however, many fellow VJ members seem to be preparing in advance. Are you aware of that guidance from the State Department? What is your source for the 1 year valid period?

Thanks!

A police certificate is easily obtained especially through Commissionaires and it only takes a few business days. I got mine right after I received the NOA2, but it doesn't hurt to be proactive by a month or so.
