Hiya,

My girlfriend (USC) fell in love with this guy from Ecuador she hardly even knows. She is going there for a month very soon. She'll be staying in Cuenca and she is going alone. Do you have any tips? Is Cuenca safe? Any suggestions? Is it possible that this guy wants to get papers using her because he was denied a tourist visa? Thanks

Sorry...I guess I am butting in because neither me nor my fiance are from Ecuador...but I don't think going as a single female to a foreign country alone is a good idea. Let me clarify that statement. Going as a single female to visit a male that you've never met in a foreign country ALONE is not a good idea. I can see if she had already met him and knew people who knew this guy...but she has no idea of his character. What happens if she gets over there and he is not a good person??? I don't know but I think it is a bad idea. Unless she knows in her heart that he is who he says he is...if she has no red flags or anything...then MAYBE she should go. I know for me that I had already met my fiance and I knew people who knew him and I knew his character...but even then...when I went down to Nicaragua for a month, I was very nervous because I didn't know his family or anything. I felt so comfortable being there though because I trusted him and I had him to lean on. (I did bring a friend with me who stayed for a week.)I would just be soooo careful if I were her. Sorry for intruding...but it worried me to think of your friend going down to Ecuador alone...alicia

Hi Glorya,

I'm not from Ecuador either, but it does not matter where your friend's going, she should never go alone. Can't she bring anybody else with her? just imagine what could happen in case of an emergency, does she at least speak Spanish? what does her family think about this? they should interfere, how bad can it be to bring someone along? she has to agree with this condition...

I met my husband online as well, he came to see me in Brazil almost a year after, and his family was freaking out, specially because he did not speak any Portuguese. But then again, I had gone to school with his sister, and we had been talking everyday online, as friends, for about a year.

Please do whatever you can to help her make the right decision. This guy might be truly in love with her, but unfortunately, you never know who in it just to become a resident in the US.

If what they feel for each is love, he'll understand her decision.

Very noble of you to worry, Glorya, your friend is lucky to have you.

My story:

09/23/2002 - Met Chris online, there was something very special about this guy =0)

07/16/2006 - We got married in Reno, Nevada.

USCIS:

08/13/2006 - Filed for AOS, AP, EAD - they were VERY carefully packaged with a detailed cover sheet on top of each of the forms, just as VJ's instructions recommend. It was A LOT of work, but it did pay off! (we firmly believe this is what sped up our process big time)

08/31/2006 - Biometrics appointment

09/09/2006 - Received my AOS appointment date!

10/26/2006 - EAD touched and AP APPROVED!

10/27/2006 - AOS appointment at 7:30 AM! APPROVED IN EXACTLY 70 DAYS!!!

11/01/2006 - EAD approved

11/02/2006 - Email notification - greencard will be mailed as soon as it is ready! YAY again!

11/02/2006 - Welcome to the United States of America letter in the mail! Almost there! =)

11/06/2006 - EAD card and White card (a.k.a. greencard) arrive in the mail!

Journey Total Duration: 80 days

Filed for removal of conditions on 07-28-2008 and had them removed on 09-10-2008
