They run background checks so crimes will affect you.

Outside of that it's like renewing your drivers license.

So basically if you've been a good boy like me, you just breeze through it or do they have a quota in which they deny/approve?

No quota. You've already been vetted. The only way to lose it would be to give it up yourself (by absence or handing it over) or committing a crime that would make you ineligible to remain an LPR.

If you've done nothing wrong then it really is just submitting a form, paying the fee, getting your prints and photo updated, and getting the card. Just like getting a license except you wait longer :P

Thank you for your response. One quick question...how do you know all this? :-)

You are a PERMANENT RESIDENT. That means permanent. Of course, it comes with some responsibilities, and if you prove yourself unworthy by being a bad guy or moving to another country, then I hope you can understand the privilege being taken away.

But to think you would be denied due to some quota.... that they would say, "Well you are a LPR but now we have too many so I willy nilly decide that You sir! must get denied!" Do you really think they would do that? Do you think people would accept that? People that have lived their lives in the US for 10+ years, just getting kicked out because of the luck of the draw?

You can read the relevant laws and see for yourself. Look up the "Laws" section at uscis.gov.

Thanks. I was just curious, because if they deny your renewal of a resident card you basically have no way of appealing the decision.

I've not got a criminal charge against me and have paid all taxes etc. Maybe i worry too much.

Yes, you worry too much. Also, it is quite possible to appeal a denial.

But it's not like renewing your driver's license. Your permanent resident status is valid regardless of whether you have the card. Even if the card is lost or expired, you still have a valid permanent resident status, and are legally entitled to do all the things LPRs are allowed to do. You just have no current document to prove it.

I know that doing serious crimes will cause them to take away your permanent residency. But in that case, they are actually taking away your status, not just "not renewing your card". So it is very different than what the OP is asking.

But I would find it really weird if it were possible for them to "not renew" your card due to something you can't fix, while not taking away your status. You would be a lawful permanent resident, but would permanently run into difficulties for things that require the documentation for LPR.

In simplicity it is. That is all I was referring to.

Yes what you post is correct but his qn was "What reason would they deny someone for when renewing 10 GC? Do they usually renew them without any fuss?"

My answer stands. Crimes affect it but it's like renewing a DL in its simplicity. Yes there are other more in-depth answers I could have given but instead I chose to answer the question that was asked.
