A Republican lawmaker in New Mexico introduced a bill on Wednesday that would legally require victims of rape to carry their pregnancies to term in order to use the fetus as evidence for a sexual assault trial.

House Bill 206, introduced by state Rep. Cathrynn Brown ®, would charge a rape victim who ended her pregnancy with a third-degree felony for "tampering with evidence."

“Tampering with evidence shall include procuring or facilitating an abortion, or compelling or coercing another to obtain an abortion, of a fetus that is the result of criminal sexual penetration or incest with the intent to destroy evidence of the crime," the bill says.

Third-degree felonies in New Mexico carry a sentence of up to three years in prison.

I am mixed about the abortion issue, but even I think this is barbaric.

Maybe they ought to rename the GOP to BOP - Barbaric Old Party. These guys are nucking futs.

"A Republican lawmaker. .." That pretty much sums it up!

Indeed.

DNA doesn't change so abortion or birth the evidence is still there so if the former just bag it and tag it and put it with the rest of the evidence of the rape. Or just take a sample if the fetus and store it for future use.

Stop making sense. It's un-Republican.

Well, they do seem to have alienated every other demographic in the US. I guess they want to work on alienating everybody but the gun loving terrorists. I may have to stop watching FNC soon, but liberals are totally annoying as background noise, and even with the sound off, they are just not that appealing to look at. I watch the Filipino news from 6 pm to 7 pm, so that I don't have to listen to Hannity.

Uhh, guys? This thread is bullsh1t.

SANTA FE - State Rep. Cathrynn Brown, sponsor of an anti-abortion bill that she called poorly written, said her intent was not to charge rape victims with a felony if they terminated their pregnancy.

Brown, R-Carlsbad, said her bill was badly drafted and that she did not catch the language problems when reviewing it.

...

Brown's intent was to focus on a perpetrator, such as a stepfather who raped a teen, impregnated her and then demanded that she get an abortion.

Brown did not want to put any onus on a rape victim.

An attorney, Brown said her practice is to edit a bill carefully before releasing it. This time, a drafting error occurred and she was not diligent enough so it got through, she said.

Guess someone picked up Run's offer to proofread their work.

Still even in the case mentioned I can't imagine forcing a teen in this situation to forcibly carry a child to full term so that the cops can have evidence. The police can solve cases like these the same way the do for those that don't have a full term pregnancy to work with.

There was not and is not a thing wrong with the OP. According to what AJ(?) linked, the genius who wrote this bill did a very bad job therefore it's not the reader's fault that they comprehended said bill exactly the way it was written (evidenced by the OP). So no what happened here is not like instances where the 'facts' that some people post here are broken down and disproved.
