My parents raised me both knowing the same language (not English) as their native language and deliberately tried not to teach us so that we would learn English and integrate well. They would only speak it as a 'secret language' when they didn't want us to understand. As a result I only know a few key words like 'candy' and can't say anything. I also feel somewhat deprived of my heritage and wish they had taught me it because it is too late now to get that perfect native accent. I guess I am not surprised as their friends all did the same with their children. I love languages and have worked on learning a few but nothing compares to learning it growing up as a child.
