If you have to send the Green Card back...

My understanding is that legally you're supposed to have your green card on your person at all times as evidence of status. What are you supposed to carry as evidence of status if you have to send the green card back because of an error?

My wife never got a welcome notice, just the green card.

Hmmm.... not sure. Make a photo copy to have on file?

Personally.. I'd make that copy for file, and hopefully still have the EAD on hand with AP (if applied and received) then let anyone that needs to know.. know about the situation.

I do not think it will be that much of a deal really. Except the waiting for the corrected GC to come back :P

I believe the procedure is that you first send in the form with a copy of your GC. Once you get your NOA, you then go to your DO and get your passport stamped before you send in your actual GC.

One, definatly make a copy. Two, if you can make an Infopass appointment and try get a I-551 stamp in your passport. Tell them you have an error on your greencard (show them) and you will be filing an I-90 to correct it but need proof of status while you wait for a replacement. Bring your NOAs for AOS, your greencard and the letter it came attached to if you still have it and any emails from USCIS stating an approval just in case. I filed my I-90 first and showed my NOA for the I-90 but there have been reports of people not receiving or receiving late this NOA so get this done before you file.

For more information on filing an I-90, please read this thread: Greencard Error Thread

Timeline

I came to USA on an immigrant visa in 1976 and became a citizen in 1986. I carried the Green card with me only when I was travelling outside the country (those daily trips to Canada for lunch/pizza or gas etc.) Once I moved out of Michigan, I never carried my green card with me. Yes, I had my driver's license with me for ID. I was never asked for my Green card. And since I became a citizen - guess what - there is no ID for it! You get a certificate of naturalization (8 by 11.) You can't carry that with you! Everyone relies on your drivers license for id unless you are travelling out of the country. So! Don't worry about it. Make a copy and keep it at home. Good Luck
