I see different posts from time to time regarding requirements for income above the poverty level. Unless someone has a job that has insurance benefits that they can add their wife to it looks like the only other option is to purchase health insurance. If a person is having trouble with the income requirements from the start, Obama care could be a killer for the petitioner or anyone that helps the petitioner as far as finances are concerned. Having been out of the US for a number of years now I wonder if there is or will be insurance offered to new immigrants, in some kind of pool, or if a person will have to try and find something on their own. I would like to know what others have planned since medicaid and other state or government programs are off limits. I believe the law is that we have to be insured now.

Thanks,

Dave

The law is not yet in effect. Pools and private insurance and those options are not yet set up. I don't think anyone knows exactly what we'll get, when we do get it.

I was just reading an article on it today. Aparently when the supreme court ruled on Obamacare, they left it to the states to decide if they want to accept the "medicaid expansion" portion of it...

under current law, legal immigrants have to wait 5 years before qualifying for medicaid.

The way I read it now is...

If the state you live in does not accept this medicaid expansion, then the low income (legal)immigrants would be referred to a number of subsidized private coverage. After 5 years, they can apply for medicaid.

If the state you live in accepts the medicaid expansion, the rules expand to cover low income Citizens, with no mention of immigrants by the supreme court...ergo, covering immigrants with medicaid as well...

At any rate, non of this will take effect until Jan 1, 2014.
