now will women have to register for selective service?

For true equality, they should be required by law to register. Not holding my breath...

Any of you ever humped a 70lb ruck up and down Yankee rd at teh Ft Benning school for boys.? Anybody else on this board ever held a combat arms specialty ranking ?

How I spent MLK day. Ruck UP!

Not as fast, not as fit, but still combat effective.

if women (as a class of people) were all simply unable to do the job and if allowing them to do it would actually endanger the rest of us, i'd say it doesn't matter how much women wanted to do it... it's all our business to make sure they can't.

however, given the history of women serving in combat for other militaries around the world, we know that is not the case.

so all we're left with is an emotional desire to not be subjected to news of a female pow being gang raped.

Tell us about the history of women in combat for all those countries

It's not about shooting. It's not about getting captured.

It's about living in a muddy sh!thole for months on end. Can women do it? Sure. There are plenty of women out there capable of doing so. Some would even be good at it. But the dynamics of a unit change when women are added. In today's "we're all equal" military that means adding separate facilities and accommodating a lesser standard of function for some. In combat, that's just not practical nor is it desirable.

Why we'd purposefully degrade our combat effectiveness is beyond me. I guess that's what it takes to make everyone feel special.

they could go right ahead and make it mandatory for all citizens to register at 18.

doesn't mean every man or woman would be sent into active combat, that isn't the only function the military serves.

You say that now, because there is no draft. You have a better chance of getting called for jury duty.

the dynamics change? is that like saying, a man can't help but loose control if a girl is dressed like a #######?

It's along those lines. Primitive behavior at its worst happens in war. But, that's not what I'm referring to.

I'm talking about the simple psychological distinction we have between men and women. Something happens to people in stressful situations. More often than not, some man tries to protect the women. And men tend to "help her out" when it comes time to carry stuff or do tough jobs. In a combat role, that can be deadly.

Can it be overcome? Time will tell.

The military's been really good at overcoming our moral shortcomings. We're taught to kill. We're taught to destroy things. We're taught to do all manner of activities that we know we're not supposed to do. I guess helping people who are weaker, slower, and softer can be overcome too. Let her die. That's her job.

I wonder what Col. Grossman has to say about all this.

Both sides give up a little privacy, but, hey, we are all adults here, right? Suck it up, sweetie pie! And, it was a lot more fun getting lost in the woods with a couple young female cadets on the night navigation course, than it ever was in any of the other all male service schools I attended.

In training it is fun! It's nice to have someone to look at, smells good, keeps you company.

But, when it comes time for that same person to drag you out of C-wire while you're taking fire... not so much. "Oh, you're so heavy!"

There has already been a test case. The soviets did it. We should see if it worked for them and what problems occurred.

The Soviets didn't do it.

They had women serve in home guard militia units and fill the lines once they were depleted of men. They didn't have front line combat troops that were women until they needed them. They also took kids and old folks, just like every country on earth. And it didn't work out so well for the women. Many were killed. Many were raped. And almost every single one of them was relegated to a support role as soon as men could step in and take their place.

What we're trying to do here is say the women are exactly like the men and just as capable. They are. They can carry a rifle and die like any man. But as the Soviets found out - just as we soon will - the value of human life in your society as a whole is changed once your women are sent to fight. In trying to be "special" our women will learn they're just as worthless as everyone else.

i thought we already steamrolled the value of human life with roe vs. wade?

why do women who want to serve in combat not already know they're not special and just like everyone else?

Beats me. Women are "special" until it comes time for them to do all the special jobs like open pickle jars.

He will be delivering your Obamaphone. It's an undocumented secret, all you have to do is ask him to stay and... he will. Just one rule. No sex.
