Republicans pass three month extension of debt ceiling

The House overwhelmingly passed a bill Wednesday afternoon to allow the federal government to keep borrowing money until the middle of May, as Republicans attempt to defuse the debt ceiling as political issue.

The legislation, which was unveiled last week at a House Republican retreat in Virginia, passed on a 285-144 vote.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday the Senate will pass the House bill without changes, noting that the legislation is “clean,” meaning it contains no spending cuts.

So, Obama has to avoid all those landmines until May, and then it will get kicked down the road for another three months. Meanwhile, the sequester still looms on the horizon, less than 36 days left....(cue in music track from start of 1941 or Jaws)

The measure also contains a provision that slaps at the Senate, which hasn't debated a budget since 2009, by withholding the pay for either House or Senate members if the chamber in which they serve fails to pass a budget plan. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., announced Wednesday that the chamber would indeed debate a budget this year but maintained the GOP's "no budget, no pay" move had nothing to do with the decision.

So, that did get included. Good. That means things can be handled under reconciliation rules.
