Consensus regarding travel with expired green card

My wife and I are about to send out her I-751, her green card expires in March. She would like to travel back to The Philippines in June or July of this year, and I would strongly doubt she will have her permanent card by then. Is it generally considered safe to travel with the expired green card and the NOA for the I-751 or should we wait until her permanent card has arrived?

You can travel no issues wiht your card and extension letter I797 after filing your ROC. Others have got a I551 but it is not necessary.
