Hi! I am currently on an F-1 student visa working on my PhD in Massachusetts (originally from Canada). My boyfriend and I are engaged (he still lives in Canada) and are working on finding a way for him to come here once we get married. I have heard things about me having to switch to a J visa in order to bring over a spouse? And needing to prove that we have a certain amount of money in savings before he can get here? He is currently looking for work in the US, but if he can't find a job before our wedding would he be able to look for work after arriving here on my visa? Finally I'm not sure how long the process takes, but would it be possible to start the paperwork before our wedding so that he can move here right away after we get married?

I know I have a lot of questions! Any guidance at all would be greatly appreciated :)

There is a visa for a F1 student visa holder's spouse- F2, but he cannot work on that. Is a TN visa a possibility?

F2 is the obvious one, you can certainly have every thing ready to go in advance.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Thanks everyone for the help! I will be here for another 5 years, so he certainly will want to look for employment while he's here. Would he be able to apply for a work permit with an F-2? Or could he move here with an F-2 and then look for work and switch his visa status once he gets hired? Also I'm not very familiar with the terminology... what's a TN?

Thanks again!

Also is there somewhere with information about how much money (my income, combined savings, etc.) we have to prove that we have in order for him to piggyback on my visa? I'm getting paid through an academic fellowship but I don't know if it would be considered enough to support both of us according to the government requirements...

He can look for work whilst here on a F2, he would need a job in a category that the Employer can sponsor him for a work visa and is prepared to do so.. TN is a type of work Visa, google is your friend.
