To successfully change your mailing address, from the Dept of Overkill:

-file AR-11 as required by law. This does not change your *mailing* address, but it informs USCIS where you might have been, at one time. Just do it, it's the law.

In the past, our predecessor, the INS, required every alien in the United States to report his or her address annually, in January. This requirement was eliminated in 1980 and annual reporting is no longer required. However, if you are not a U.S. citizen, the law still requires that you report any change of address change within 10 days of the change.

How Do I Report a Change of Address to the USCIS?

AR-11 does not generally generate a NOA receipt. Send by trackable mail.

-Copy of AR-11 to any LOCAL or district office where you might have a file. Include a letter saying: change my mailing address

-copy of AR-11 to any Service Center where you might have a file. Include a letter saying: change my mailing address

-Phone call to 1-800 MisInformation line with the request: please change my mailing address

-file I-865 for USC Sponsor as required by law. You *may* get a NOA for this one and it *might* change the Sponsor's mailing address. Or not.

Sponsor's Notice of Change of Address

-file Change of Address and Mail Forwarding with the USPS. Your USCIS mail *might* get forwarded to your new addy. Or returned to USCIS, you never know. Unfortunate side effect: the PO sells your new address to bulk mailers and you are now back on every junk mailing list under the sun.

Do-it-yourself: Stop junk mail, email and phone calls

http://www.obviously.com/junkmail/

30 days later

-Follow up phone call to 1-800 to see if address change is captured.

-Cross fingers and keep an eye on processing times and when you expect to be contacted. Don't let it go for ages and then say 'dude, where's my case?'.©

shusterman: Understand that there is a difference between reporting your address change, and getting your mailing address changed.

Have you filed anything yet? If not, you have no address change to report.

When you file AOS, use your new address on the form.

Call the 1-800# as little as possible.

Peter: if you have nothing pending, you only need to report your address change (your sponsor too). You do not have a mailing address on file at the moment. When you file a new petition or application, you can use your new address and that effect the mailing address 'change'.

ok, my question is when it comes time to remove my conditions can I just put my new address on my forms and that will be enough??

As far as I can tell if you are in the US and aren't a US citizen (and a few other things like being diplomat, here less than 30 days) you MUST file a change of address form AR-11 and I-865 (only if you've filed I-864) within 10 days of moving. Putting a new address on your removal of conditions form will change your mailing address, but you're still required to have filed to let them know you're now living somewhere else within 10 days of moving (the AR-11 and stuff won't change your mailing address, it just lets them know where you are).

yes, I know this and I have done that..... but as Meauxna said this doesn't actually change your mailing address and I just wanted to know if putting the new address on the forms would change my mailing address

AR-11 is NOT a 'change of address' form. AR-11 is for keeping track of where them dern ferriners are.

Otherwise, what you said.

Now, for a definitive definition of who is required to register (thinking of shursterman here), I'll let someone else tackle that. shusterman is still a visitor, and the act of applying for AOS will be her registration, as far as I can see. I'm not credentialed to make that call, however.

I can't see the point in calling 1-800 when they dont' even know who you are. How can you change a mailing address when they don't have one for you to start with?

oops, I missed Meauxna's reply  thanks

If you move, you must report your address change (AR-11). If you don't have anything pending, that's it (plus I-865 for your sponsor).

When you file your I-751, your new mailing address will be used on the form, and that is where your new correspondance goes.

I can see where you're going with this. Yeah, I don't think I have to call anymore. Thank you for the explanation. Just the same, I think I'll file form AR-11 just to get it out of the way (and, so, I can avoid any future paranoia. I already have enough of that going for me. ^_^ )

Oh and, no, I'm not trying to change my mailing address with the PO. My intention is to report my change of address with the USCIS because of what the USCIS website says, that is, aliens need to report any change of address within 10 days. ^_^
