I am a Godparent and I had Godparents, but I am Lutheran, not Catholic. So, I think many religions have godparents as part of their practice. It was basically just a role that you are given to ensure that the child continues to receive their religious upbringing.

I do know that there are no custody issues associated with being a Godparent, though.

Last night my hubby's brother, Carlos asked my hubby if he could be the godfather to his youngest daughter, Carlos' wife's sister is going to be the godmother....

At first I thought it was strange that they didn't ask me to me the godmother because we thought that the role of godparents meant that in the event of the child's parent's death the godparents would get custody of the child but after some further research I realize we were mistaken... being a godparent doesn't necessarily mean that you would become legal guardians of the child....

but what actually is the role of a godparent?? Is it more of a figurehead type thing, our does my hubby have some responsibilities??

I remember growing up some of my cousins had godparents (aunts and uncles) and they would get extra gifts at Christmas... I didn't really understand and I felt it was a little unfair to the rest of us

A Godparent is traditionally a Catholic role, and in the event of the parents death, the Godparents oversee that the child gets the Catholic sacraments they should. So basically it's just the religious upbringing Godparents are responsible for.

do you have to be a church going Catholic to be a godparent? ok just read your response, Daniel

my hubby said he hasn't gone to a Catholic church since he was a kid....

My parents are godparents to a good friend's son. We are not Catholic and what being a godparent means to us, is that my parents are like an aunt/uncle almost to him. And if something happened to his mother, he would live with his father, but my parents would make sure his life goes fine. It doesn't even have to be religious, it can just be people who will be emotionally supportive of that child through it's life.

It's not a "catholic" role. I have godparents, and was not brought up nor baptized in a catholic church. To me my godparents were the ones that would have legal custody of me, if something had happened to my parents while i was under the age of 16.

FFS, did you read the rest of the thread or just to the point when you found something you disagreed with and decided to stop and argue about it. Later on I posted an article entitled "Godparents Across Religions".......Don't be so quick to jump all over peoples errors.....never know when you make your next one!!!

Godparents are many things to many people.....that's why I wrote "traditionally." Some people!
