I heard the clip tonight on a podcast and had to replay it several times to believe the guy actually said it. He did!

Appearing on CNN this morning, "Gun Appreciation Day" chairman Larry Ward said that if blacks had been armed, there never would have been slavery in America.

Ward's group planned the appreciation day for the weekend of President Obama's second inauguration, and some critics have attacked the celebration for its proximity to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

"I think Martin Luther King, Jr. would agree with me if he were alive today that if African Americans had been given the right to keep and bear arms from day one of the country's founding, perhaps slavery might not have been a chapter in our history," Ward told CNN host Carol Costello.

Co-panelist Maria Roach of United for Change USA immediately took issue with Ward's claim, labeling it a "ridiculous" example of "theater" in the gun debate. She then went after "Gun Appreciation Day" as a whole, calling it a "power play" that ignores the victims of mass shootings and instead focuses solely on appreciating the weapons themselves.

That would certainly drive up the cost of doing business if you were a slaver. High enough to nullify the economics of slavery? I don't know.

Seems like a rational hypothesis, although not practical. If by magic they had all become armed over night I am sure it would have stopped a lot of it.

Question is, would they be able to thrive on their own? Being brought over to a new country with few to no rights, survival would have been very difficult.

That is why I said although it is not practical. Now if they had been armed when it started, back in Africa that would have stopped a lot of it. Regardless slavery was a blight on our countries history, and it causes problems that, the after effects are still with us. It irritates me when white people say, I did not own slaves, as if that wipes the tragedy away as if it never happened.

A bill came in the GA house a while back asking the state to issue a formal apology. Although symbolic I thought it would send a message that we as a people and a state agree that it was wrong. It was voted down, under the same pretext. we did not own slaves. They seem to miss, The state you represent as a member of the house did .

if slaves had guns (they didn't?) and they'd attempted to use them to free themselves, they would have been dead/jailed slaves.

anybody to hop on board with ward's idiocy doesn't know jack sh*t about early american history.

rational but not practical? nature boy - take some online classes, visit harpers ferry..something..

I said it sounds rational but is not practical meaning it would not have worked, which is the same thing you said.

Only the irrational would think so.

why do you think the colonists used to overthrow British rule ?

I never said that arming slaves would have prevented slavery. I said it's a sound hypothesis but would not be practical. I.E. Work..

Do you know what a hypothesis is and how it is different from a theory. I used that word for a reason.

no. there is nothing rational or practical about ward's statement. you keep saying it's rational. how so? explain your logic.

they were brought here for free disposable labor. why would a rational hypothesis be that we brought free disposable labor here, only to give them guns to defend themselves? #######.

any woman slave that reproduced, gave birth to a slave. maybe if we had practiced manadatory slave abortion, slavery would have ended early on.

maybe if we had encouraged slaves to educate themselves and gave them means to experiment, instead of making their literacy illegal, slaves could have found a cure for dysentery or small pox. jeez.

and there were small groups of slaves that did revolt and went to live with indians..that didn't keep us from from bringing over more slaves.

Isn't it funny when someone posts something that someone else said that is completely off the wall and batsh*t crazy, and you think "Nobody could possibly defend this!!"

And then someone does. Or tries to.

If the Blacks had guns, due to their superior athletic ability, wouldn't we white folk be picking the cotton, and they be living in the Colonial mansions?

It's more mental than anything, without a proper education and situational awareness, they would have been disorganized at best and not really effective.
