Hello everyone,

I need to travel to Laos to visit my mother. She's been hospitalized and the doctors say she doesn't have much time left. I am a permanent resident, green card, and I need the re-entry permit fast. I would like to leave Feb. 22nd of this year. I'm assuming critically ill mother is an emergency situation so I'd like to get my forms expedited. Is it possible?

What's kind of timeline am I looking at realistically?

And what forms and processes do I have to get/go through? I've done a lot of research online, checked the uscis forms, and even tried calling the Lao Embassy and National hotline, unfortunately today is a Federal Holiday so the phone route is not looking good.

Can anyone help me please? All of these forms and procedures can be quite confusing.

P.S. On a sidenote, I still have my expired passport from Laos, would I be able to renew that and use that instead of a re-entry permit?

You only need a reentry permit if you plan to be out of the country for 2 years. If you just want to travel, for up to a year, you do not need to do anything special. You do need a valid passport from your country to board a plane.

What are your plans (and sorry for the situation).

Thank you for your reply. I need to be out of the country for about a month, so I only need a passport from Laos? My passport from Laos is expired how do I go about renewing it and is that possible in less than 30 days?

I'm not familiar with Laos but there's a good chance they would let you in with an expired passport since you are a Lao citizen. You could renew your passport while you're there.

There are certainly no US immigration consequences to you leaving right away so in your position I would check with the airline that an expired Laos passport is sufficient for them to carry you, and get on a plane to see your mother.

That's news to me to be honest, my family and I have always used the I-131 forms to get a travel document in order to visit Laos for a month. Would it be possible to renew my expired Lao passport through the Lao Embassy in D.C.?

I imagine so. You'll have to call them and ask. You can also ask them if your expired passport will work for entry into Laos. You've spent hundreds of dollars on I-131s?
