My first day at a new job!

I have been in the US for 3 months now and two weeks ago, i applied for a few jobs. Not seriously expecting to get one, just wanting to get health insurance out of it really since i didnt have any.

Tonight is my first day as a cook in Pizza Hut. I will just be doing training for the next 3 days but i cant help but feel extremely nervous! I dont know whether to go in the front or back door, what to even say or do and i cant remember the managers name even though he has told me three times!

They appear very relaxed and friendly so i hope it goes ok. What can go wrong about learning how to cook pizza?!

Im mostly worried about looking like an idiot or doing something really stupid!

So how did everyone else cope with their first day? Did people accept you and get on with it? Did you fit in ok?

I have posted it in here rather than the work forum because it seems to be more about how to get a job rather than actually doing one in there. Figured you guys would know more about it!

There is a reason they need a cook and you are that person. They need you as much or more than you need them. They dont care about health insurance as a motive. The manager needs you to make the food so he or she can keep their job too.

Either door will do because they both lead to the kitchen.

Call the store today and ask what the night managers name is if you must know now.

Someone will teach you how to cook the pizzas and I think they have helpers to prepare the actual orders as they come in.

Everyone is nervous on the first few days. So were the people you will work with. Just acknowledge the fact and laugh it off.

I worked as a cook myself and experianced all of this first hand. You will find that this all passes and you will settle into the job.

Thanks everyone! I know i am very lucky to have got the job. I had no references (my UK employers have all closed down!) and i have no car (no public transportation, will have to ask people for rides) and im also a parent working around my husbands job. So in all, i look pretty unemployable but they wanted me anyway! For everyone looking for a job, hold out hope because somebody will like you and want you to work for them.

Thank you My ride there and back has just cancelled! So i have just had my first experience of booking a taxi over here. I told him what i wanted and he said "OK" and hung up! I had to call back to make sure it was actually booked.

Time to spend my wages on driving lessons i think!

Small update now that im home. Everything went fine and they were all very friendly. Going back tomorrow for more training.

The taxi experience was as bad as the phone call to book it! It turned up with two people already in the back seat. They indicated for me to get in the front so i did and i was extremely uncomfortable. One of the women in the back (friends or relatives of the driver) i had had some stern words with two weeks ago because she knocked on my door for no reason and woke up my daughter. All around bad experience and i was pretty put out that i was paying for their social life. What if it had been more than just me who i had booked it for? They would have had to get out!

I called the taxi to take me home and they said 20 minutes so i walked home in 3 degrees F with no gloves or proper clothing. Absolute nightmare and just reinforces why i NEED a car. My nose was actually frozen and there was ice on my eyelashes and my hair was frozen by the time i got home. I need to work to pay for the driving lessons but i need the car for work. Catch 22?

DON'T walk home like that! You'll surely get sick. See whether your coworkers can drive you even part of the way home, if not all the way.

New jobs are hell, but Ning above was completely correct about everything. These thoughts are all that I can add:

ANY job is a GOOD job.

No matter how good a job you do, you can always do a better one.

I like the above, because the more I think about them, the better the advice becomes.

Jeez girl.......that cab ride surely can't have been legal?

What did hubby say? Im gunna have to learn to drive too,its what I miss most when over there.....no footpaths or public transport.

What the situation with your husband? Can't he pick you up? You shouldn't walk home late at night by yourself. Can't he teach you to drive? You don't need professional lessons in America and the driving test is fairly easy.

My husband cant drive for his own reasons so cant teach me either or pick me up. His mom always says she will but it never happens and i doubt it ever will. Even my husband started to agree with me when he saw me ask her once. She said yes, so i asked when and she just kept turning away from me and not answering. She will happily drive me places when she is not at work (once a week or so she gets a day off).

So with nobody who can/wants to teach me, im going to have to pay. There is only one company around here who does it and they charge $60 an hour *collapses* but what choice do i have?

No i dont think that taxi ride was legal, it cant have been! My husband was very shocked that they arrived like that! If i didnt have to be at work and i just wanted to go out, i wouldnt have got in! Plus the only people who use taxi's or walk around here are the regulars in the welfare office or school kids... I hate looking like one of them!

I very much considered asking a co worker but it was not busy in there so they were running on two staff which both needed to be there since they couldnt leave one alone.

I have a friend who lives close by who is going to come and get me in future if it happens again. His car is about to fall off the road so i dont ask him unless he offers. But he did when he found out i walked. So you guys arent going to have to give me a telling off again

At one of my first jobs I had in this country, my first day went with getting pulled over by the police because my exhaust was loud. He was utterly confused about how to handle my "licence" which was just a piece of paper authorizing me to drive until it was confirmed that I was here legally. lol
