Child expat visa type – DS-230, #35

Greetings,

The OH and I are having some trouble with question 35 on Form DS-230 part 1 ("List dates of all previous visits to or residence in the United States.... Give type of visa status, if known."). Hubby lived in the US as a child from 1984 to 1990 because his father was an expat worker sent to the US by his employer for those years. Does anyone know what kind of visa my spouse would have had under this arrangement? The whole family accompanied his father to the States during his post there. The visa type/name might have changed between 1984 and today, but wondering if anyone knows what it was called at the time or some way to indicate this on the DS-230.

It says "if known". He doesn't know so answers "Unknown". At his interview, if the officer wants to know more, he can tell the family story.

Very sensible. I didn't want to raise any red flags with the "Unknown" but as you say, if the officer is interested in this s/he can always ask at the interview.
