I'm not finding that returns are cheaper. Leaving about a week before Christmas, searching on the ebookers website, and travelling from London to San Francisco, I'm finding that singles are about £100 cheaper.

Am I doing something wrong?

Any general advice for booking these tickets would be appreciated (I *know* it's going to be expensive to travel just before Christmas, but that's the way it's going to pan out for us).

Don't use ebookers. They are expensive in my experience. Book through the airlines directly on their websites...or try www.airline-network.co.uk They can have some good deals.

MattG also try Expedia or if you want to speak to someone on the phone Trailfinders aren't too bad on 0845 058 5858.

You might be finding that it's cheaper for you to book single rather than return as you are looking before Xmas whereas I'm looking at January 2007.

You are correct, fares are extremely time of year/day of travel/time of day sensitive and typically in that order.

YMMV

Yeah, I remember trying to book a Atlanta-Calgary flight to cover Thanksgiving weekend (day before US Thanksgiving to monday after); it was at least US$300 more than if I went the Friday before (and "bridged" the rest of the week as it would likely not be productive anyway).

My ticket is gonna cost me £300 - £350 single and about £500 return so I'm booking a single. But I am kinda cheating on that one becuase I'm getting my fiance to book it from the us and then sending me the tickets here becuase it works out cheaper to do it that way $566 for my ticket.
