If they do, i may have a little problem.

I submitted my N400 application last Nov. 2012 and i will be soon scheduled for an interview. Everything's going smoothly with my application but i thought of something.... I am a flight attendant for a regional airline and we fly in out of the country so I am required to have my green card and passport with me at all times. I know it takes about 4-6 weeks to apply for US passport. On the interview, should i ask if i could keep my green card after the oath taking until after I get my US passport? (Will they let me?) And if they do, will that still be valid when i get through Immigration at airports?

I am confuse, I cannot work without those documents with me... Please, i need your input and advice... Thank you!

As soon as you complete your oath ceremony, you then become a USC. Your GC will be taken away, as it would be invalid anyway once you become USC. You can apply for expedite passport from Passport office. You can collect your US passport within same day or next day.

Yes they will take your GC at the oath taking (which may or may not be the same day as your interview - if not, you are fine to travel on your GC in between interview and oath).

At your oath, they will take your GC but give you a Certificate of Naturalization (CON). Using the CON, you can apply for a 'rush' passport (even same-day is possible) by using the information here: travel.state.gov List of Passport Agencies - they will issue you a passport there and then if you can prove you need to travel internationally within two weeks.

So if you can give yourself a day or two to do this after your oath ceremony (once you find out the date) before you next have to fly, I think you should be fine.

Hello,

Yes, you will have to submit your green card, when you will have the oath. However, they give you the certificate of naturalization.

I'm sure that you can use your certificate of naturalization instead of your green card- Ask your employer.

Think also that it can be a little risky to travel with this document (A4 format) it seems me.

You can apply for the us passport the same day, bring everything that you may need for that.

Good luck!

They will take your greencard when you take your oath. And they tell you don't submit an application for a US passport for a week or so, because you're not in the system yet (My wife just went through this a few months ago). Perhaps get an Advanced Parole during the lapse of citizenship and getting your new US passport?

Hi,

At my citizenship ceremony they collected all green cards before the oath was administered. Unless something dramatic happens you will receive your naturalization certificate at the ceremony (I didn't - Superstorm Sandy prevented all the certificates being ready for the ceremony). You can get a passport on the same day if you make an appointment at a passport agency and bring proof that you need to travel internationally within two weeks you can get a passport the same day, or within a few days. If you have a letter from the HR department stating when you will fly internationally that will work, or you may be able to bring your work schedule. Call the passport agency nearest your home and ask what they will need.

Plan in advance, have your passport application filled out before your oath ceremony, make an appointment for one of the DOS same day service centers day after your oath ceremony. Explain your predicament to your employer.

Have to say, both my wife's employer, stepdaughter's college were very understanding in their need for the all the time off they had to take off for the immigration process. Hopefully, your employer will be the same. Without taking that time off, they wouldn't even be here.

Can also have your SS application already filled out, if you are first in line when they first open, only takes about five minutes, even one of your friends or family members can do that for you.

Thanks guys! Once i pass the interview and after oath taking, I will definitely do the expedite passport processing and i will see too on what my employer can do to help me with this. I appreciate all your responses!

fwiw, I just (1/13) got a new passport using the standard, non-expedite method and it only took 2 weeks. Doubt expedite would have been any faster... Mine was a renewal though.

yup.. plan ahead now.. . let your inflight operation manager know about your situation and have you taken off the schedule.. you definitely will need a us passport even though technically your philippine passport is still valid (dual citizenship rules apply to you).. even though you fly regional (which one btw?), you never know when you have to divert and end up outside the us, like canada.. not having a us passport would be a big problem then.. i'm a pilot i and was in the same situation as you..

Great! I feel much better now knowing that I have options other than waiting for weeks for my US passport. I work for PSA (US Airways express) and you? I rarely fly outside US but we must have our passports all the time. I am on reserve too so I never know where they will send me...

Thanks again kabayan!

Brother Hezekial got his same day so yeah, that's quicker than 2 weeks.

Yep you can get it same day depending how early you apply, and of course paying the fee.

Expedited and next day service are not the same thing. The stated time for normal processing is 4-6 weeks, expidited says 2-3 weeks.
