BTW - what do pedophiles have to do with homosexual marriage?

Because all homosexuals are pedophiles, apparently

It just goes to show that people don't understand the freedoms they claim to cherish. Defending NAMBLA on a point of free speech does not equate to condoning what they stand for. Apparently the headline and lead-in text in a news story is enough to render an opinion on the entire focus of the article.

BTW - what do pedophiles have to do with homosexual marriage?

Because all homosexuals are pedophiles, apparently

Oh no!! I am sure that is not what a few of the members who posted stuff about pedophiles meant. No no, they will surely deny that...it was just about civil rights....sure it happened to be about pedophiles but it was not implying that at all. Silly silly.

Even if it isn't a direct comparison - it does make you wonder why they are mentioned in the same sentence.

It's the "open the floodgates argument". Considering that a lot of the people who are against gay marriage, like Gary, seem to suggest its ok, providing that the argument is extended to include polygamy, beastiality, pedophilia and incest etc. Considering that they claim the moral high ground against homosexuality, its highly likely that they don't agree with those other groups and behaviours either. So what exactly is their argument?

It was about the civil rights aspect of it. The whole Idea of a pedophile org. being able to exist is a little crazy to me. I think a line needs to be drawn somewhere especially when the org. has to do with something so hideous, Illegal and HARMFUL! I also believe MLK would never approve of what the ACLU involves itself in.

Marc,

Does that mean that you feel giving rights to pedophiles is going too far--just like giving equal rights to gay people would be? Is that a fair comparison?

White supremacist groups exist in the US and are just as offensive. They all have a right to free speech, which is what the case was about. Has nothing to do with homosexuals or gay marriage.

ALL people have the right to say what ever they want, I'm saying a group that is based on molesting children should not be able to exist! However the people within the group as individuals should have all the rights that we all have. A "GROUP" of child molestors should not carry any civil rights as a "GROUP" I wasnt trying to connect molestors and gays together in anyway (funny how that happened) My whole point of this is the ACLU gets involved with this group thus enabling them to continue! White supremist groups are very bad also! They have civil rights too? individually yes, The group should'nt The ACLU has and never will come running to protect their civil rights?

Protect the rights of hate groups, you mean? The ACLU sure protected the rights of the KKK to march in the streets of heavily-Jewish Skokie, Ill., for one example.

"Why Gay Marriage is Wrong"

01) Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

02) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

03) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

04) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

05) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britney Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed

06) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

07) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

08) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

09) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

How about this?

The benefits to children of growing up in a father-mother household are well documented, but a child in the US has less than a 50% chance of doing so. Redefining marriage to include same-sex couples would reduce that percentage even further.

Discuss! ;)

Or increase it to a 2 parent home. That is really beside the point though because all the tens of thousands of gay people who are raising children now are not married.

What part of civil liberties do you not agree with? Freedom of Speech? Right to Bear Arms?

I agree with civil liberties when these civil liberties do not encroach on another's civil liberties.

Here an example: The Westboro Baptist Church (based in Topeka, Kansas), has been having its membership actively protest at military funerals for soldiers returning from Iraq. They've been doing this in several states, according to the story. To make matters even more distasteful, the REASON the church claims it is protesting is because the "soldiers' deaths are a sign of God punishing America for tolerating homosexuality."

So in response to all of this, Kentucky created a law, signed into action by their governor, that stated if you want to protest at a funeral (including wakes and burials), you need to be at least 300 feet away from the site. Failure to comply with this law means that you can be charged with first-degree disorderly conduct, and have up to a year's stay in jail. The ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) has filed a federal-level lawsuit claiming that such a law is unconstitutional, and that the law "limits freedom of speech and expression."

There you have it. The ACLU is protecting the Westboro Baptist Church's so-called right to harass the families and friends of fallen soldiers at their funerals. It's because of insane actions like that, that many dislike the ACLU in today's society.

I agree that it sounds like they take a hard line stance on freedom of speech. However, the ACLU is just like the NRA - while they get the most press, they are not the official protectors of our civil liberties. It's certainly valid to question or criticize their over-zealous approach to free speech as much as the NRA fights ANY kind of gun legislation. Somewhere, common sense has to come into play.
