"Homophobia is just that: a phobia. A morbid and irrational dread which prompts irrational behavior flight or the desire to destroy the stimulus for the phobia and anything reminiscent of it"

Internalized homophobia

Internalized homophobia (or ego-dystonic homophobia) refers to homophobia as a prejudice carried by individuals against homosexual manifestations in themselves and others. It causes severe discomfort with or disapproval of one's own sexual orientation.

Such a situation may cause extreme repression of homosexual desires. In other cases, a conscious internal struggle may occur for some time, often pitting deeply held religious or social beliefs against strong emotional desires and needs. This discordance often causes clinical depression, and the unusually high suicide rate among homosexual teenagers (up to 30% of non-straight youth attempt suicide) has been attributed to this phenomenon

The label of internalized homophobia is sometimes applied to conscious or unconscious behaviors which an observer feels the need to promote or conform to the expectations of heteronormativity or heterosexism. This might include making assumptions about the gender of a person's romantic partner, or about gender roles. Some also apply this label to LGBT persons who support "compromise" policies, such as those that find civil unions an acceptable alternative to same-sex marriage. Whether this is a tactical judgement call or the result of some kind of internal prejudice (whether in a cause-and-effect fashion, or definitionally) is a matter of some debate.

Some claim (including Sigmund Freud in his psychoanalytic theory) that some or most homophobics are repressed homosexuals, but this claim is somewhat controversial. In 1996, a controlled study of 64 heterosexual men (half claimed to be homophobic by experience and self-reported orientation) at the University of Georgia [18] found that the allegedly homophobic men (as measured by the Index of Homophobia)[19] were considerably more likely to experience more erectile responses when exposed to homoerotic images than non-homophobic men.

However, the homophobic men also tended to report more negative emotions in response to those particular images (not sexual arousal), and the researchers noted that general anxiety has been shown to enhance erectile response. There was no significant difference in results on the Aggression Questionnaire. The group recommended further research

What I like or dislike has nothing to do with the discussion. I can't actually believe that this is your definition of unnatural either, considering that many hetrosexuals indulge in this practice.

My question is, is homosexual behaviour dangerous/hurtful/damaging or threatening? In fact, is there any way that homosexual behaviour can do anything bad to either the participants or anyone they have contact with?

I "love" when people assume a load of things by a statement. Because I think the word marriage should mean 1 man and 1 woman, then I am a "hater of gays". What really bothers me is that those of you will make harsh judgments of me and you don't even know me.

I imagine you think that because I feel the way I do, I go around holding signs that say "I hate gays" or "God hates gays". If you think that, that's pretty funny. I guess some of you are never around people with different opinions (in real life), because you'd see that not everyone who does not support the gay marriage thing is a hate mongerer.

I am fortunate enough to know people who support it, people who oppose it, and homosexual people, yes I said I know homosexual people. And I am able to get along with all of them. Shocker?? I have a friend who I've known for many years who announced she was a lesbian about 8 years ago, can you believe I and her get along even though she knows my stance? Impossible! :o:no: I should be hating her according to many of you who don't seem to think it's possible to disagree with something and not hate a person.

Introduce your children to all kinds of things (that are not illegal) and people. Don't preach hate, teach love and acceptance.

Sorry, my parents never preached hate to me. I was taught to love, but that doesn't mean I have to agree with everything that everyone does. You can disgaree without hating.

I will not apologize. It is child abuse to me as much as being gay is the same as murder to some who posted. Assassinating somebody's character because they chose to love someone of the same sex is reprehensible IMO.

...along with the majority of voters in CO ID SC SD TN VA WI, should they have children & instill their beliefs in them, are child abusers? Is that really what you're saying here or have you just spoken out of anger?

BTW, to the above-mentioned posters, I have included your names because I have read this whole thread and inferred from your posts that you disagree with gay 'marriage' in one way or another. If I have gotten this wrong, then I apologise!

I don't believe that everyone who isn't in agreement with the notion of gay marriage is automatically in 'hate' mode, but I do really wish someone could give me a good sound reason why it's 'wrong'.

How is it good enough to say, it's wrong because some religious teachings say so? What is it that makes the practice of homosexuality evil?
