Hello Everyone,

I have a quick question regarding re-newing my passport... Not sure if anyone will know and if not I will just call Passport Canada. I am wondering if when I re-new my passport to show my married name if I am required to send in our marriage certificate? I know we have to send in our original birth certificate and not a copy, I'm just not sure about the marriage one. And I absolutely HATE sending originals... Its annoying and stressful. Any help on this matter would be great! I want to get it done soon so we are all prepared when we get our NOA2 (which won't be for God only knows how long :( ).

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I just did this in August. You have to do a new application, not just a renewal and yes, you'll need a certified copy of your marriage certificate. I had mine notarized and sent it with the application. If you've been married before you'll need certified copies of your divorce decree as well. I sent mine in and had it back in 15 days. :)

Hope this helps and good luck with the passport and with NOA2!

I was at a Service Canada centre in my city in June and they required original or certified copy. You have to go through the whole process again with a guarantor. PITA! lol But afterwards it's just the simplified renewal which is nice. When I got my 1st passport getting a guarantor was a lot harder because it had to be a professional like your doctor or a lawyer who knew you for 2 years. Now it's just another person with a Canadian passport that's valid or expired for less than a year.

I renewed in August as well under my married name, sent all originals with a note "Please return original documents" and received everything within 2 weeks.

I feel like Passport Canada is pretty reliable.

On a side note, you might want to get another certified copy of your marriage certificate, just to have. That's what I did (with my birth certificate and marriage certificate), so now I have two copies in case I need to send one in. I always have one home, but I'm a compulsive worrier, so... !!!

Service Canada has always returned documents in my experience. Both times I've gotten a passport plus all my friends and family have always gotten their documents back. But 20ish people isn't a large focus group either. Lol
