I normally like to read through the Moscow Times and Saint Petersburg Times websites from time to time to have an idea on what is going on over there. Though my Fiancee would say I don't need to know anything Russian because she thinks it ok that I don't, I still like to know. But anyways I did read this opinions article today and well lets hope some of his opinions never come true, especially the one about banning RUS marriages to US citizens.

Ouch...not surprising though. A lot of Russians truly believe that while hating everything American and being anti US they are making their Mother Russia into a strong and powerful country... So sad.

Just my 2 cents...

Russian (and Ukrainian and British and Canadian for that matter) opinion articles tend to be MUCH more direct, blunt, frank than corresponding US articles where we have this inane fear of offending someone...anyone! And of course the writer can lose his job for offending someone. Something that does not happen in Russia and did not even during the Soviet Union. Don Imus's comments would never have raised an eyebrow, nor would the actions of Rod Blagojovich have bothered anyone (he gets to appoint the Senator all by himself? What did you expect?) Nor the actions of Secret Service agents in Columbia (they are men outside the country, of course they have sex with prostitutes!) I watched a Russian political debate where one candiadte demanded another candidate be taken in the corridor and SHOT in the head for his political opinion!

President Yanukovich stated in a debate he would pay the Ukrainian national debt by "selling Yulia's (Tymoshenko) earrings" !!!!!!!!!

That said, there seems to be little worry about offending Russian or Ukrainians in the good ol U S of A because, after all, they are tall, white, beautiful, Christian, educated and speak several languages so....YEAH! BASH THEM!

You could find just as many articles, TV "news" specials in this country calling for an end to marriages between US citizens and Russian women. There seem to be no end to the "exposees" of the "abuses" of the K-1/CR-1 process. They alomost always use the example of some nerdy ooking American man with a Hottie-Tottie Russian woman. What about the nonsense we heard after the very attractive "Russian spy" got run out of the country after having been found to have "infiltrated" PTA meetings????? She still makes the news!

It is good to keep informed, but do not get too worried about some opinion articles. In general the Russian government has made it easier for the families of Russian citizens married to foreigners in recent years
