TRENTON — More than 30,000 New Jerseyans found jobs last month in the biggest hiring spree since federal officials began keeping track of the figures in 1990, the state Labor Department reported today.

...

The monthly report showed employers added 30,200 workers to their payrolls, with gains spread across all of the state’s major industries.

For Gov. Chris Christie, December was a "historic month" that validated his economic policies.

...

Overall, he said, New Jersey added 48,000 jobs last year, making 2012 the best year for the state’s labor market in a decade.

...

Nonetheless, Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D-Gloucester) played down the surge in hiring, and said Christie had not worked hard enough.

...

"Enough is enough already," Sweeney (D-Gloucester) said in a news release. "When is the governor going to come up with any kind of plan to put people in this state back to work?"

30K for the month of December but only 48K for the whole year? That's quite a contrast. How come?

You're a textbook lib so I know where you're going with this. Let's just nip that in the bud, shall we?

Sandy had "very little" effect, Christie said, because the federal government had not yet approved the $60.4 billion aid package that the House completed on Tuesday and that is expected to energize the regional economy.

That's not where I was going with that question at all. When job creation averages 1.5K a month and then jumps to 30K in December, one wonders what triggered that jump. You know, I'm happy for every job that is created out there and don't give a damn whether the jobs are created where a Republican or Democrat is governor. We need all the jobs we can get so these 30K jobs are terrific news. But I still wonder what triggered that huge jump.

Insurance companies are much faster to get the money out than governments. When Sandy hit, I was thinking there's going to be a booming economy in that area very soon. Of course much of the money will come from raised insurance rates around the country. Hopefully that transfer of money will equate to some nationwide growth at well as its spend on goods and services beyond the region. I don't understand why people are presenting it as only government money goes into rebuilding after a disaster. As to Stephen Sweeney's comment, politics as usual. Governors normally don't have the power or resources to make big changes in local economies. They can work to create a climate that encourages businesses to move in. Then can court businesses to move in and hire people to. But both are rather slow moving vehicles for economic change and take a concerted effort for long time with all branches and parties in government working together. Today's Democratic and Republican parties appear more willing to screw up the economy rather than work with the other side to improve it, if they think the other guy might get credit.
