we're also scouting new places to live, though we probably won't be moving for a while...we're strongly considering the atlanta area

Yep we are scouting...but probably won't move for a while...a year or 2 to save up some money

So far we are liking Oregon (southern part so we can get to North Cali), Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Arizona...those seem to be the top contenders.

We are scouting also. We really wanted to move to ATL but there's hardly no federal government jobs for me. So now we're looking at Florida and maybe Texas.

I know we've talked about this before....BUT....

does anyone have families that are just not going to accept your relationship?

My family is giving me hell right now. totally disrespecting my situation. they are confused about my future with him. How will he be able to contribute? what type of work does he do? his education, or lack thereof? it's awful. we've been fighting for days. i'm supposed to have a big chat with my parents this weekend and work on somethings...

anyone feel me?

(((Darah))) Sorry to hear that your family is stressing you out right now. My mom was (and probably still is) worried about Andre being the provider of our family and treating me right and all that good stuff. Race was never an issue. She used to give me a lot of #######...stuff like "do you really love him" "it doesn't seem like you are really in love" "what will be be able to do for you" etc. It just took time for her to respect my decision and get to know him as a person. She has really come around and I have been very fortunate that she has taken to him pretty well and they get along. She is awesome (L) The only one on my mom's side with a problem are a couple of uncles that I see 1 a year at the most so I don't even worry about them. They can chat all they want.

My dad's side of the family is a completely different story. My grandparents were ok with me going to JA as a missionary but the minute I went back for just a vacation I was out. They let me know that if I chose to go there then I would be disowned. Their loss. I remember going there for summer vacation (they live in missouri) and being "caught" watching the Fresh Prince tv show. I was lectured for about an hour or 2 about the choices I was making and a whole lot of racist ####### followed. They are very ignorant racist people and if they choice to live like that I really wouldn't want to be around it anyways. We don't need that kind of attitude in our lives.

I just thank God everyday for our new church family who have been nothing but supportive and accepting of our relationship.

Well I am partial to Orlando  ..I really like it here. It is pretty expensive to buy a house here, thats why for now I live in an apartment. As for the Hurricanes, Orlando is a little inland on both sides so most of the time the hurricanes have slowed down by the time they reached us...my apt had no damage from the 3 hurricanes that hit us a couple years ago. It is also one of the fastest growing cities in Florida. I have family that live in Jacksonville, but I dont really like it there.....A few years ago I was going to move to Atl. but now since my parents moved here to be closer to me, i cannot move.....

What kind of work do you do Doodle?

Well if anyone wants to come here for a visit let me know..sometimes I can get discounts at hotels through my job.

Where do you live now?

Well about your concerns...

Hurricanes, well thats understandable but I have lived in Florida almost all my life and have survived tons of them.

Crime, Hey there is crime everywhere....no more crime here in Orlando then there is anywhere else?

Highways, Not too bad they are expanding most of them around here...the thing I do hate about Orlando is the toll roads...I take one to work and it cost me $1.50 each way so $3.00 a day to go to work, I could take other roads but the toll roads are faster.

OK well for those of you that would like to check out Orlando, maybe we can plan a get together here and I could show ya'll around town....Most people that come here just see the tourist area, but there is a great city here...and our down town is growing like crazy, there are in the process of building a movie theater and shopping area in the down town area...ther is plenty of malls and outlet stores here and lots of things to do.

Well there were a bunch of us in here a little while ago and now everyone is gone...I am lonely and bored here at work...so I guess I will talk to myself :whistle:

right now i am managing a large inn which consists of 40 rooms, suites and cottages on Martha's vineyard. room rates range from $240-575 per night and our cottages rent for $2200 per week. we are a seasonal operation. open 6 months, closed 6 months. i am here doing reservations all winter, hiring of staff (mostly foreigners...lots of jamaicans) and monitoring all the construction and projects that we have going on throughout our property....

it's a good job, but i want to move into a larger hotel/resort company and get into the "real world" as opposed to this new england island paradise i live in now. the money is great...but there is no culture at all. year round only about 15,000 people live here and in the summer it swells to like 100,000 people.

what's wrong with jacksonville?

Well if you are serious about looking into Orlando, with your experience and with all the hotels and top resorts here, I dont think you would have any trouble finding a job here.

WOW Marthas vineyard, how neat is that, I would love to visit there sometime.

Adrian wants to get into the hotel industry when he gets here, since he has 3 years cruise ship experience he shouldnt have any problems landing a job, it might not be a top dollar job but I told him he can always move up the ladder....once he gets his GED he wants to get a 2 year degree in hospitality management.

martha's vineyard is amazing...i love it. but as i said before, with the average single family home starting at about $450,000 it doesn't make much sense...

but, it's a great place to make money and work hard. last year i saved over $15000 in one season. i worked my tail off at the inn and catering..but it was worth it. now with both of us working full time we are really going to chug away this year. save save save and then get the hell out

what do you think the average wage is in orlando?

joanna...i am soooo sorry for cutting off really short. but i have to run out the door. i'm off for the weekend and actually picking up one of my brother in laws at the ferry. his first time coming to this island and he lives in the bronx.

i won't be back until monday. can't wait to catch up then. take care until then. blessings everyone!

thanks for everyone's thoughts regarding my question. i'm really in a bind because we had recently been talking about moving to Austin, TX where my parents live...i love austin and feel it could be a good place for us to start our real lives...plus his mom and sister are in dallas! perfect we thought!

now my sister is saying that i should prepare myself for some of the family possibly never understanding and not being able to cope with the relationship...she said "don't be suprised if dad just can't deal and can't continue with his talks with you" and to piss me off even more she brought up the oprah show from the other day about interracial marriages...she said that at least 60% of the US has a problem with it. I asked her where she got that statistic....she said"shutup". THen she asked what henry does, what his brothers do...etc. and I told her "cook, nurse, construction". she said "and that's what a typical immigrant family does.." i'm so angry!

So much for austin...i'm so bummed. We can't decide where to move and we want to move by December. i don't know...

mindy, do your parents live near you?

and did you have a close relationship before Roy?

is being with a jamaican man totally out of the blue for your personality or had you dated men similar to him?

I am so sorry you are having so many problems with your family accepting your relationship. Both of my parents were completely against the idea too at first. They wouldn't even acknowledge that I was engaged! Even after Tony got here, my dad refused to meet him or talk about the situation. My mom caved in first and eventually dad came around too. Now they really like Tony and vice versa. Tony even went out of town with my dad and my cousin last summer for a weekend fishing trip! Just give it time. If they're old fashioned like my parents, it's going to take some time, patience (on both ends) and understanding. Hang in there :luv:

Holy cow :o That is crazy!!! I can't imagine paying that much for a starter home. My house is 1100 square feet with 3 bedrooms, 2 car garage, basement, etc. and was only about $145,000

HA, HA.....do my parents live near me.....3.7 miles to be exact. And I go to their house every day for work. Yup, five days a week -- 9 hours a day I have to deal with them ignoring my "situation" and just plain treating me like S*#@.

We have never been close -- not until I started working for her seven years ago. Then we became closer than ever before. But, on a scale of "normal" families I guess you could say we still weren't "that" close.

I have never felt that it was my mothers "right" or "privledge" to be a part of my "personal" life. Many of the men that I have dated in the past -- she has known nothing about. Me, I have always done what I wanted to do -- always. She never approved of that. We are two separate people who have nothing in common....that being said, nothing I would ever do would surprise her.

They should come around eventually. After 2 years of not talking to each other my mom was ready to come to JA to meet my wife. Of course I came back to the US to start things again before it actually happened.

I actually understand the origins of her prejuduce, though I would have expected her to get over it in the last 50 years. She grew up in Jamaica before racial predujuce seemed to erode away. She was tormented being the only white girl in her school.
