[Victor from Russia] Part-time work in Russia, especially temporary, isn't common thing, really. As long as in US it's hard to find full-time job, in Russia mostly you would be offered full-time jobs everywhere. Most of part-time jobs in Russia I'va seen are high school and college students oriented - it's advertisment delivery (booklets, flyers, etc.), "promotion" (standing in grocery supermarkets in a rush hours and offering to customers to try some new product) and things like these. That's that I can think about.

Don't worry, she'll have lots of experience as to what she can expect when she gets here.

You guys have discussed this.....right? That she will also won't be able to find meaningful work here when she arrives?

Why not? She won't, even with a PhD degree.

Do you both understand and accept this as part of the deal?

What about an entertainment gig?

Phil (Lockport, near Chicago) and Alla (Lobnya, near Moscow)

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!

she was a poker dealer lol... but she argues she can't get a job (even at restaurants or markets) without an introduction?

[Victor from Russia] "Introduction"? Wondering what is it, may be it's what we call "испытательный срок", what technically is a probation period for new hires, usually about a month. Well, it's very popular in Russia to hire people with a probation period, but what's wrong with it? Yes, probation usually paid less than regular position and doesn't guarantee to you workplace after probation is over if employer will not be completely satisfied with you, but as I understand, with your fiancee job isn't a survival thing, but just something to keep her busy, so what's so scary about getting a job with probation in her situation? Not mentioning that even if this practice is common, it's not in every single place.

Don't worry, she'll have lots of experience as to what she can expect when she gets here.

Yeah, you so much right! In Russia I was office administrator (officially) and "2nd person" after the owner in small company (actually), my job was pretty challenging and my education was good enough for this job, I was trusted with really big amounts of company's money without signing papers (I was just trusted that I will not steal any coin), I was authorised to sign on my own contracts with our customers for thousands dollars, and many other things. Now I'm just a regular merchandiser in department store and my job requires so much less thinking and involves so much easier intellectual challenges that I feel like my brains have a long-term vacation, lol. I like my job because it's nice place and cool co-workers, and with 8% of unemploynment in our state I'm happy I have it, but yeah, it's much lower job level than I had before arriving to the US. All places where I applied to comparable position with what I had in Russia even didn't respond to my resume and didn't want to talk to me after getting know that I'm a newcomer and looking for my 1st job in the US, they didn't tell it directly of course, but that's how I felt trying to get job there.

[Victor from Russia] Oh, like "nepotism" (my wife told me you call it this word in the US)? Then it's a fantasies. If you're applying for a really great job or in a really great company where dozens of applicants dreaming about getting this place, then you might need to know somebody in the company who will make a "protection" for you. But it's rare case. For the most jobs in Russia you don't need it at all, and for something like entry-level position in regular department store or restaurant, nepotism is a nonsense, they hire random people everywhere just with interview. I've never heard "from the 1st hands" about cases when applicants needed a nepotism to get a job like a cashier in supermarket or waitress in a usual restaurant. So it's not a problem at all to be hired just walking in to the company.
