My wife is a (conditional) Permanent Resident of the US. She returned to her home (Colombia) for medical treatment and she has not fully recovered. She has about 5 weeks left on her Permanent Resident card and must submit a request to remove conditions. I think I can get that submitted with her outside the US, but I want to know if there is a way to request an extension of time for her to return after her "green card" expires.

Thanks

Steve

The I-751 (petition to remove conditions) *must* be filed before her green card expires. Soon afterward she will be mailed a receipt notice extending her status for a year. She can use that and the expired green card to return to the US. Not long after the receipt/extension notice, USCIS will send her an appointment to have her biometrics taken. Those biometrics can only be taken in the US. If she still can't return to have them taken by that point (probably ~6 weeks after filing I-751) I'm not sure if there's a way to delay the appointment.

How long has she been outside the US? If it's approaching a year or more, there are separate "abandonment" issues.

Removal of conditions, Aug - Nov 2014
