Hi all!

I'm really excited to finally be able to qualify for a visa to apply for, for my (now) husband (he is a Canadian citizen, and I am a US citizen, he wants to immigrate here). I just got married the 15th, and had to come back to the states yesterday (had originally planned to stay till the 23rd but I needed to come back because of university, Im a masters student).

I read the guide about the IR-1 visa here, I was just wondering is there any other basics I should know, and how much proof should I provide of the marriage/relationship? I currently plan to submit a joint credit card, and affidavits from his family and mine, along with pictures of the ceremony. Should I include other pictures as well, and things like airplane tickets in the past? Also, is my husband not allowed to come to the US until this is all sorted?

hi sashy,do you mean cr-1 130 visa the IR-1 IS for if your married over two years,write a short letter how you met,a copy of you us passport to show stamps coming and going, trips boarding passes, receipts atm recipts,hotal,wedding receipts pictures,to show of on going relationship,add any evidence you have,

You should provide as much evidence as possible. Plane tickets, messages, card envelopes, and pictures of before you were married especially with friends and family. Try to join your bank accounts and put each other on your car insurance. It also is good to be the beneficiary of the life insurance too. We submitted pictures of our wedding and a few of us just together (just printed on paper), photocopies of plane tickets, our joint account and car insurance as well as 2 affidavits. I don't think the affidavits hold much weight but I take pictures of "stuff" not "us" so we didn't have much of that. We can add more evidence if asked.

Your husband should be able to visit. It's really up to the customs officer if they let him through or not. But basically showing he still has ties to Canada, if asked, including things like a return ticket, bills, a lease or mortgage, pay stubs, and a letter from an employer are all things that show he isn't trying to immigrate at that time. They may not ask for anything but they might and it's good to have. I've visited my husband twice and am going a third time in a few days. Some visit every weekend too. Other people have been denied going across too though. You always have to be truthful though, never lie.

Unfortunately I don't own a car, nor do I have life insurance yet, I'm 23. I'm slightly worried my age is going to count against me-- I haven't had a full time job yet, just a bunch of part time ones because of school.

Other good evidence to include are emails, Skype call logs, texts, etc. Your age won't count against your, your financial status will. You have to have a job that will support your and your husband for 125% above the poverty line, or you need to get a joint sponsor that is able to support him in addition to their own family. Read the Affidavit of Support instructions, form I-864, on the uscis website for more details.

No. You do not have to be living with or related to your co-sponsor.

CR-1 is if you have been married for less than 2 years. IR-1 is if you have been married for 2 years or more.
