The US was originally formed as a nation where Christians could worship peacefully without belonging to the (state) Church of England. While some muslims did come unwillingly (ie as slaves from Africa, and not a majority of them), there was never any significant population of them in US till 20th century. Nominally, there is still a Christian majority of 65%+ in US.

In countries with far less than overwhelming majority, you have had imposition of Sharia or "Islamic Theocracy"--so why do you protest at even the remote possibility of "Christian Theocracy" imposed on a (nominally) majority-Christian nation?

Actually, one principle in our constitution(country) is the seperation of church and state. So the question is valid for those that care to keep this principle intact.

As for a Christian Theocracy (a country where the government and the Church are one and the same, or where the Bible is the law of the land), there is no such place today, nor has there been in centuries. This cannot be said of Islamic Theocracies. Are there Christian groups who would like the 10 Commandments to be the law of the land? Perhaps. I, however, do not support that. I want Church and State kept distinct and separate.

As far as I'm concerned, Republicans have "lost their way" and Democrats are...well, they're Democrats. That really doesn't need a whole lot of explanation.

An interesting perspective I heard last night on this is that as a result congress might be more conservative than before. It does appear that the low hanging fruit in the Republican Party did in large part belong to the more moderates. Try as they might to have distanced themselves from Bush, they could not escape the angry voters who saw this as a way to get at the Pres. The Democrats who were able to take over conservative seats did so by being conservative themselves- just not with an R next to their name.

I think more than ever Congress is not so much divided between Republicans and Democrats, but between Conservatives vs Liberals. How do these Social Progressives fit into this though? Are we in for a split in the Democratic Party in the next 2 years I wonder?

You will never get a straight-off answer from doodlebug, scott--especially given his/her obfuscations so far.

Plus, the church-state separation is rather easy to keep (and nearly impossible to break), given that you'd be highly unlikely to get a consensus on what would constitute "christian law" acceptable even to the vast majority (let alone all) of the many denominations. Simply put, a "Christian Theocracy" simply ain't happenin'.

At the same time the government should represent it's people. You can't simply abandon religion and pretend it does not exist.. The government of Australia regularly provides grants and funding to community projects for all sorts of religious groups in the country, with great success.

The same people trying to drive GWB out are the same people pushing to eliminate religion in the US..
