My fiancee arrived in the U.S. on December 14th.

We got married and got our marriage certificate on December 31, 2012, yup, the last day of 2012.

On January 2nd, we went the the Social Security Administration to apply for her Social Security Card, we provided them with her passport and I-94 that attached to the passport when she arrived at the airport.

The Social Security Admin office told us they couldn't verify her status from the Immigration office. They sent a request to the Immigration office to verify and told us to wait up to 4 weeks to receive her social security card if they can verify her status.

It's been over 2 weeks and I have not heard anything from them. I know they said up to 4 weeks but I just want to ask if this happened to you before? I want to be able to get my wife to go to school, add her into my healthcare and also can file tax as married.

Are you trying in the married name or the maiden name? With the holidays and all that, she may not have been in the SAVE database or the SSA person was a moron and could not look her up. Go back and ask them to look her up using the A# instead of the last name as the person entering her last name may have screwed it up. For example my wife's last name was worng on our tax return as we had to do a paper return and when they typed in her name they hit the B instead of the V. If you get a lot of gruff about still not finding her ask for a supervisor. You should have left the day they could not verify her in the system and then you could have gone back and tried again. Now you have to deal with the fact they are doing a verify which takes time. Mention to them that she needs her SSN ASAP for school and for taxes and the clock is ticking on the I-94 expiring--given the processing times for the EAD and GC you cannot wait for them so you really need the SSN BEFORE the I-94 expires. I would not mention that you are married or if it comes up tell them you want the card in her maiden name as trying to get it in the married name MAY add more problems and more time to the process.

Good luck,

Dave

Note: i quit trying to get my wife a ssc after she arrived on a k1. Too much a hassle and headache dealing with these people. I was still able to get her on my private insurance and her to a few of my monthly bills proof that you will need for the GC. Don't get too upset if you don't get it.

It is almost 2 months since I applied for social security card for my wife but the SS Admin are still telling us that they need to get verification of her status. We came to the SS Admin office 4 times to ask, we also made numerous phone calls to check but still no good news. Each time we came after the 4th week, they made copy of her passport, her I-94 and her K-1 Visa to send to the immigration office but then, days and days and still no good news. My wife can't take learn to drive, can't work, can't go to school.... and I still can't file my 2012 income tax. gosh, what is going on and what should I do now. I've done all the steps from people here advised.

IMO, she's aged out of being eligible in another 2 days.

I'm sorry you had such big trouble with this.

The SSAdm still have not been able to verify my wife status to issue SSN for her.

I mailed her AOS including the work authorization form I-765 to USCIS yesterday.

also yesterday the SSAdmin called me after I left them so many voice messages in the last 2 weeks. They told me that I need to call USCIS to ask for AED, which is the work authorization form and extend her I-94 because her I-94 is gonna expire on the 13rd of March, which is next week.

Gosh, I am so confused and frustrated about this.

her I-94 cannot be extended.

If if COULD be extended (note, it cannot be) then there's a chance that SSA would issue her a SSN.

What were your thoughts, after reading http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/405546-ssn-howto/ ??

[i'm asking for input... Your Input, please]

We applied for her SSN on January 2nd. over 2 months ago.

We got married on December 31, 2012, almost 3 months ago.

We filed her AOS 2 days ago.

regardless, she is ineligible to receive an SSN in the timeframe 2 weeks prior to her I-94 expiring.

Again, I'm sorry you're having trouble.

If you have followed the path at http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/405546-ssn-howto/ you would have found out about the SAVE database problem on the first day and could have fixed the problem at the local office of CBP.

Relax. She could not have worked until the EAD or GC arrived anyways. All the SSN does is allow her to be put on items that seem to think they REQUIRE a SSN when in fact they do not a legal reason to REQUIRE the SSN--it is just that the SSN has become a national ID number that everbody asks for it and everybody gives it without thinking. In most staes she needs to provide legal immigration status in order to get a DL which is again the EAD or GC. I would file for an extension on your taxes for this year as she does not have her SSN and you need that to file your taxes. Nothing wrong with filing an extension, just make certain you have paid all that you owe or are getting a refund. My Dad file for an extension just about every year--it is there, use it.

After you get her GC go to the SSA office nearest to you and file for a SSN based on the name on the GC. If it is the maiden name use that and worry about getting the name changed after the number is issued. For years my Mother used Middle Maiden Married as here legal name on all documents, but she never chaged her name with SSA. When she retired she went back to First Middle Married on all documents. Both names are considered her legal name. The point of this story is to say that it is the number that is important and as long as she has some legal document--i.e birth certificate, passport, GC, Marriage Certificate, etc--that can show she is who she says she is; she can resolve the whole name issue in time.

Good luck,

Dave
