Hi,

I am currently an au pair, but my year is ending and I am about to leave.

I would like to come back in Usa with a student visa, it will be better for me since I am 26 already. I met my boyfriend in USA, and really want to keep this relationship and get a degree in USA.

My question is : can my boyfriend sponsor me to attend a community college ? How long can this take ? I am planning to come back to visit with a tourist visa while we will be waiting ( if it's possible ) .

Thank you,

Sarah

Yes he can, but they may be suspicious you are using the student visa to immigrate (ie that you will marry and then attempt to Adjust Status). You would need to show proof, somehow, that you intend to return home after your studies.

Also, it may be difficult to get a student visa approved for a community college, as opposed to a regular university. What do you plan on studying?

They will ask you if that sponsor is your boyfriend, and they may deny your visa based on that.

Because:

- as previously said, they may think that you will use the student visa to immigrate,

- if you and your boyfriend break up and be in bad terms, no more sponsor. A boyfriend is not considered as a "strong" sponsor (if he becomes your fiancé or husband, that's different) because let's face it, break ups happen everyday...

You will quickly understand that having a boyfriend in the US makes things be suspicious to the Embassy and the CBP at the airports, when you are dealing with an non-immigrant visa. You will have to be prepared for it, and always have strong evidences that you intend to come back to France.

It would be less risky if you had another sponsor.

You can contact marishka also, I know she was an aupair, then attended a community college and she had a boyfriend who is now her husband. I don't know when they met exactly, but she may be able to help you. :)

Thanks for your responses ...

I have a degree in business management.

I know that it's going to be hard to get a student visa with my boyfriend as a sponsor, but I didn't want to say that he's my bf. And of course, I am aware that its possible that our relationship ends.

I'm down to earth and I don't want to get married just to immigrate and have the green card , I am really interested about studying in USA . It is for us the best way to keep our relationship ,get more time to know each other(9 months together is obviously nothing) and for me to move on with my life.

So, I already got some informations in different community colleges that accept international students. I just can't afford the 20000$ they ask for a year if I don't have a sponsor.

Without the $20,000 in the bank, you are not going to qualify for a student visa.

To apply for a student visa, you need an I-20. To get the I-20, you need to show the college you have the money. The sponsor must have the money. The college needs proof you can pay. Your sponsor having a good job is not enough. It must be cold hard cash in the bank.

The student visa system does not work the way you think. You need lots of money or your government support to be an international student in the US.

That's the reason why I need a sponsor ! Why should I prove that I have the money if I have a sponsor ?

All international students who have a sponsor didn't prove that they could afford the college but the sponsor did !

If you don't have the money, then the sponsor has to show that he has the money. That's the bottom line. If you don't have the money, then your sponsor must have it for you to qualify for the I-20.

If your sponsor was the US government or your government, then you would have no problem.

You have a private sponsor who is not related to you or responsible for you in any ways. He has to have the money in the bank.

I am not trying to argue with you. You need $20,000 sitting in a bank. If you don't have it, then your sponsor must have it. There is no way around this.

Good luck. Your first step is a college that can issue you an I-20 in order for you to apply for a student visa. US laws require you to have available money ready to go. It cannot be future money from your boyfriend's job. The system does not work that way.

Think of the worst case scenario. You get a student visa. You get here and your boyfriend dumps you. You have no way to pay for school. You can't legally work. Wouldn't it have been a good idea to have you prove that you can pay for a full year of going to school before letting you start? That's the way the US government thinks. You have to be able to pay if you want to get the student visa. There is no such thing as a student visa now and my boyfriend will take care of things. A student visa doesn't work the way you want it to.

No $20,000, then no student visa. Look at the international student application for any US college. You have to have the money up front.

That's the reason why I need a sponsor ! Why should I prove that I have the money if I have a sponsor ?

All international students who have a sponsor didn't prove that they could afford the college but the sponsor did !

Since you do not have the necessary money to pay tuition and living expenses as an international student, then your sponsor must prove that he has the required money in a checking of savings account. Can your sponsor prove that he has the $20,000 in a checking or savings account as required?

If yes that he has $20,000 in a checking or savings account, then you should have no problem meeting the financial requirement for a student visa.

If no that he does not have $20,000 in a checking or savings account to sponsor you, then no the college will not accept you because it cannot accept your boyfriend's no cash in the bank sponsorship. You cannot get the I-20 necessary to apply for a student visa.

What do you want to study and why do you want to study it in the US. Seems a retrograde step to go to Community College.

Hey,

Can't you try to get a student loan in France (if you have someon to use as a caution, like your parents or something...), so you can have the $20 000 in your account, and you don't need a sponsor.

You say you wouldn't tell your sponsor is your boyfriend. But I am not sure it would be credible to say he is just a friend, it will probably raise questions, specially if they ask you how long you've known each other and you say 9 months. They do ask questions. For my student visa they asked me how I was gonna pay for my trip, I answered that I had money in my checking accounts and they actually asked me how I got it. Be prepared to answer questions. (And I would definitly not advice to hide truth).

If I was to do this, I would go for a loan.

Good luck to you!

Good luck in your visa journey!

From the day we sent I-129F to the day I recieved my K-1: Exactly 9 months
