Hey everybody!

My future father in law is our co sponsor and I got an email from the Embassy today stating following:

Joint Sponsor’s Proof of U.S. citizenship or U.S. Permanent Residency

I didn't know he has to proof his citizenship. Anyway it seems to be a bigger deal to get the birth certificate so to not further delay the process he said he'd just send me scans of is passport.

Now I've read up about it and some pages say it needs to have 5 years until expiry on it. Sme say you need a copy of ALL pages.

So seriously all pages? Like meaning all the empty pages (he has 2 stamps) and 5 years?

Thanks for any reply, I'm upset there is an RFE, but yet glad it's "only" that but now I wanna make sure it's right.

And one further question, the top of the page states:

We have received your recent correspondence including some of the requested documents, however in order to schedule an appointment for your final visa interview, we still require the following document(s) original and one copy. Please submit the requested document(s) together with a copy of this letter.

They don't really expect me to send in the original passport or birth certificate right?

Only photocopy for co-sponsor citizenship proof.

If I were you to be on the safe side, I would send all copies of the pages including blanks and the hard cover. When you are giving them the copy of the passport it's always the whole book. Page 1- 28

Ok safe side is good ;-)

How abou the 5 years until expiry does anybody know?

I had the exact same RFE, the Frankfurt consulate asked me for either a copy of the birth certificate or a copy of the passport from my co-sponsor (i.e. future mother-in-law). She just scanned her birth certificate and emailed it to me, I forwarded it to the consulate and had no problem at all - had my interview a week ago and was approved.

Is the requirement of the 5 year expiration date for USCIS or for the embassy?? When I (the petitioner) submitted my proof citizenship to USCIS for the petition, this was a requirement. But I am not sure about the embassy. Re-read it again to make sure you're not getting both things confused. In packet 3, I don't remember reading that the proof has to be in a certain way. As long, as it's proof I think it will be OK. At least, that's what I will be doing for my cosponsor. Good luck!!

A USC co-sponsor only needs to send a copy of their birth certificate or the biographical page of their US passport. All pages are not required. Check the instructions for the I-864. The same guidelines are applied to the I-134.

A passport only needs to be unexpired and issued with a validity of at least 5 years. It does not need to have 5 years left before expiring.
